NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team is set to open the 2023 Big West Men's Golf Championship on Sunday, Apr. 30 in La Quinta. Nine teams will play 54 holes over three days (Apr. 30-May 2) in a battle for the conference crown.
For the third straight year, the three-day championship will be contested at La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta. The Matadors are seeded fourth in the championship and will be paired with No. 5 seed UC Irvine and No. 6 seed UC Irvine for Sunday's opening round.
Last year, CSUN finished third on the same La Quinta course posting a three-round score of 10-over 874 which was its best three-round total at the conference championship since 2017. Felix Schrott was the low Matador player, tying for fourth in the 45-player field at one-under par 215. The fourth-place finish for Schrott matched Blake Brothers' fourth place finish in 2021. Felix Mory won the Matadors' last individual title at Sandpiper GC in 2017.
UC Davis is the defending champion after completing a wire-to-wire win at the 2022 championship. The Aggies finished at 11-under 853 to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis won the individual championship at 13-under 203.
The Big West champion earns an automatic berth in the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, and the individual medalist also earns his place in the regional field if he is not a member of the winning team.
As a team, the Matadors have one team victory this season (Bill Cullum Invitational) and also have five top-10 finishes.
Eirik Thomassen comes into the championship leading CSUN with a 71.34 scoring average. Schrott is second at 71.83 followed by Paul-Louis Gachet (72.31), Nick Fowlkes (73.00) and Brandon McDonough (73.59). Thomas Burou, who comes in with a 75.34 scoring average, will serve as CSUN's alternate at the championship.
The Matadors are seeking their best conference championship finish since finishing second in 2017. Behind Mory's individual win, CSUN's 2017 finish was its best conference finish since winning the Big Sky Conference championship in 2000. The Matadors have three third place Big West Championship finishes in 2004, 2008 and again in 2011.
The Big West champion and top individual automatically qualify for one of six NCAA regionals which will be held May 15-17 at various sites. The 2023 NCAA Men's Golf Championship will be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 23-31.
