CSUN Advances To Big West Semis 4-2 Against UC Santa Barbara

SAN DIEGO—CSUN reached the semifinals of the Big West Women's Tennis Championship for the first time since 2016 as the Matadors defeated UC Santa Barbara 4-2 Thursday morning at the Barnes Tennis Center.

To get the action underway, Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna defeated Marta Gonzalez and Camile Kiss 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. CSUN clinched the doubles point when the Matador duo of Jolene Coetzee and Angela Ho upset the 16th-ranked team in Division I, Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter, 7-5 at No. 1.
Honer, ranked 56th in the current ITA Top 75, tied the dual with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Coetzee at No. 1 singles. Tallia Harper put the Matadors up 2-1 when she defeated Han Solaya 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Then, Emma Moratalla Sanz increased the CSUN lead to 3-1 at No. 4. Moratalla Sanz defeated Valentina Khrebtova 6-0 in the first set before Khrebtova tied the match 6-2. Finally, Moratalla Sanz clinched the win 6-2 in the third. Kiss opened the No. 2 match by defeating Turchak 6-3. Turchak bounced back to tie it 6-3 in the second. Kiss made it 3-2 by winning the final set 6-1.
Ho defeated Gonzalez 7-4 in a first-set tiebreaker at No. 5. Ho and Gonzalez went to a tiebreaker again in the second, and Ho sent the Matadors to the semifinals with a 9-7 victory in the breaker.
"I had to overcome several difficult moments in my matches today but I'm glad we got the dub, Ho said. "Playing with everyone's support was something really special and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's match!"

Both teams were part of a five-way tie for second in the Big West, resulting in the Gauchos being awarded the third seed while the Matadors were given the six to set up the Thursday quarterfinals' dual…CSUN improves to 17-5 overall, while UC Santa Barbara ends the season 6-15…the Matadors' 17 victories are the most for the program since 2002 when CSUN went 22-9…Ho and Coetzee are 12-4 at No. 1 doubles in 2023, while Ho, a freshman, is 14-4 in doubles competition this season…Turchak and Zhytelna are 14-7 at No. 2 doubles in 2023.
