LA QUINTA, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team was able to complete round two before increasingly strong winds halted Monday's second round with the Matadors in third place at the 2023 Big West Men's Golf Championship at La Quinta Country Club.
Senior Felix Schrott, who shared the round one lead with teammate Brandon McDonough, continued to lead the individual competition after carding a 1-over 73 in Monday's second round. At 5-under 139, Schrott is the leader in the clubhouse although UC Davis' Mark Stephens is also at 5-under for the championship with two holes yet to play in round two.
After opening the championship with six birdies in a 6-under 66 on Sunday, Schrott added three birdies on Monday but also had four bogeys as the players battled windy conditions throughout the day. The CSUN senior was 1-under after his second birdies at No. 6 before a bogey at the 7th brought him back to even par where he remained after the front nine. A bogey to open the back nine dropped him to 1-over before would make post his third and final birdie to get back to even-par. Schrott then finished 1-over on his final four holes to finish the day at 1-over 73.
Following a team round of 7-under 281 on Sunday, the fourth-seeded Matadors posted a 9-over 297 to slip from a tie for first into third. At 2-over 578, the Matadors head into the final round four shots back of second place Cal State Fullerton (574) and seven shots behind team-leading Long Beach State (571). Three teams (UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, UC Davis) will complete the second round Tuesday morning before playing the final round. Cal Poly (580) is in fourth place followed by UC Irvine (591) and Hawai'i (592).

"Today's conditions were tough, but they were tough for every team. We just didn't execute very well but tomorrow is a new day and we'll bounce back. This team has the capability of getting pretty deep under par - we've done it at times this season - but we've got to get it going early and capitalize on our opportunities. If we play to the level we're capable of playing, we'll give ourselves a chance."
The Matadors will be paired with Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State for the final round two which gets underway Tuesday morning with split tees beginning at 8 a.m.
