Maryland Defeats CSUN in NISC Opening Round

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Maryland defeated CSUN 8-0 in the opening game of the National Invitational Softball Championship Thursday morning at the TC Colorado Fields.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
Megan Mikimi walked to lead off the bottom of the first. She stole second with one out and scored on a Jaeda McFarland single. MacFarland took second on the throw home. Then, Mackensie Greco hit a grounder to Vinessa Nunez at third. Nunez attempted to throw out McFarland at second but was unsuccessful, allowing both runners to reach safely. Next, Amelia Lech battled CSUN starter Lauryn Carranco to a nine-pitch at-bat before Carranco struck out Lech looking. Trinity Schlotterbeck doubled to right to score both runs for a 3-0 score. Michaela Jones popped out to second to end the inning.
Sami Woods hit her first home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the second to increase the Maryland advantage. Nunez singled to lead off the third. With two outs, Carys Murakami walked. Terps' starter Courtney Wyche ran the count to 3-0 on Mikayla Carman before Maryland catcher Kiley Goff picked Nunez off second to quiet the Matadors' threat.
The first two Maryland batters reached base off Isabella Alonso (who relieved Carranco) to begin the bottom of the third. Schlotterbock walked to load the bases. Jones grounded into a fielder's choice to Nunez as the fifth run scored. Pinch-hitter Sydney Lewis grounded into a 3-6 fielder's choice for the second out, but runners remained on the corners. Madison Runyan re-entered for Lewis and stole second. Woods grounded out to short for the final out.
Lech homered for the 16th time this season with one out in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-0.
Alexis Garcia and Carman posted back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the sixth. However, Wyche kept the Matadors at bay as she struck out Kaylee Escutia before getting Alexa Landeros to line out to left to end the inning.
Mikami's 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth ended the game.
Maryland (37-17) recorded eight hits, led by Mikami, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Lech was 2-for-3. Wyche improved to 18-9 on the year as she tossed a five-hitter. She struck out seven.
UP NEXT
CSUN (28-23) will face either San Jose State (26-28) or BYU (32-16) on Friday at either 8 a.m. PDT/9 a.m. MDT in consolation bracket play.
