Kennedy Gustin walked with one out in the top of the first. On the first Ashley Legler pitch to Mikayla Carman, Gustin stole second. Carman singled up the middle to give the Matadors runners on the corners. Carman stole second on the first pitch to Kaylee Escutia. With the count 2-0, Escuita doubled to the left center gap to drive in both runners. Gizella Vargas Sandoval homered to left center to make it 4-0. The Spartans made a pitching change, bringing in Farrah Steffany to face Alexa Landeros. Steffany retired Landeros before issuing back-to-back walks to Kylie Galindo and Sydney Freijanes. Adrianna Noriega tracked down Vinessa Nunez's drive to left center for the final out.
Shaylan Whatman led off the second with her fifth home run of the season, an opposite field blast to right to increase the lead to 5-0. Jocylyn Vidal walked against Isabella Alonso with one out in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Karizma Bergensen's blooper fell in right for the first Spartans' hit. Aubrie Thomas grounded out to second to end the frame. Taylor Squires walked on four pitches to begin the bottom of the third. Ahmiya Noriega singled through the right side to push Squires to second. Ashley Rico grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to wrap up the frame.
Makenzie Hutchinson got the bottom of the fourth underway with a home run to center field to get the Spartans on the scoreboard. Carman walked to begin the fifth. With one out, Vargas Sandoval recorded her third hit, a single through the left side to move Carman up a base. Landeros' grounder to Hutchinson, the catcher, allowed both runners to advance a base. Galindo grounded out to short to end the inning.
Squires reached on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the fifth and advanced to second on a CSUN error on the play. Alyssa Graham reached on a fielder's choice as Nunez tried to throw out Squires, advancing to third. Squires was caught in a rundown that resulted in a Freijanes' error, allowing Squires to reach third and Graham head to second. Noriega walked to load the bases. Rico walked to drive in Squires.
Allie Gardiner relieved Alonso. Her first batter was Hutchinson, who worked the count to 3-2 before hitting a grand slam to left to give the Spartans a 6-5 lead. Vidal walked before Adrianna Noriega homered to left to increase the lead to 8-5. Lauryn Carranco relieved Gardiner and gave up a double to Bergensen. Thomas homered to left for a 10-5 score. Bergeson's double in the bottom of the sixth capped off a three-run scoring spurt and invoked the eight-run rule.
Vargas Sandoval went 3-for-3 to lead the Matadors. Whatman was 2-for-3. Bergensen's three hits paced the Spartans. Ahmiya Noriega and Hutchinson each had two hits for the Spartans.
CSUN ends the season with a 28-24 record. San Jose State improved to 27-29 and was to play the loser of the BYU-Maryland game on May 19 for advancement in the tournament.
