
Carman's 2-Out, 2-RBI 8th Inning Double Sends CSUN Past UCSD 4-3

Sydney Freijanes led off the top of the third with an opposite-field single to right. Vinessa Nunez successfully sacrificed pinch-runner Kennedy Gustin to second. With two outs, Carman singled through the left side to drive in Gustin. Carman took second on the throw home. Kaylee Escutia walked before Cecil struck out Kylie Galindo for out number three.
Morgan Eng's two-out slap went off the glove of Nunez at third for a base hit. Eng stole second. With the count 3-0 on Marissa Hassis, Eng stole third. Lauryn Carranco walked Hassis to bring up UCSD's third batter, Keila Bosinger. Hassis stole second. The Tritons took the lead on Bosinger's single through the left side that scored both runners. Bosinger took second on the throw. Bobbi Aguirre grounded out to Carranco to end the inning.
Murakami was hit by a Cecil pitch with one out in the fourth. She stole second with two outs. Freijanes hit a shot to the warning track in left that Eng tracked down to get the Tritons out of the inning.
Cecil hit Nunez to open the top of the fifth. With Bella Mejia pinch-running for Nunez, Shaylan Whatman was hit by a pitch for a team-leading 15th time. Carman's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners up a base. To load the bases, Cecil issued Galindo a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch. Alexa Landeros grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Pinch hitter Gizella Vargas Sandoval doubled down the leftfield line with one out in the top of the sixth. Freijanes popped out to first before Nunez fouled out to third to wrap up the frame.
Carranco retired seven in a row before Hassis singled down the right-field line to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Bosinger's sacrifice bunt attempt was successful as pinch-runner Riley Erickson reached second. Aguirre singled to right. Escutia's throw was cut off by Murakami, who threw to third as Bosinger rounded the base. Nunez tagged her out as Aguirre advanced to second. Sophia Neal flew out to center to send the game to the seventh.
Carman singled to left with one out in the seventh. Escutia ran the count to 3-2 against Cecil before working out a walk. Cecil went past the 140-pitch mark to strike out Galindo. Landeros tied the game with a single to right center to plate Carman. Landeros stole second on a 3-1 count to Murakami. At 3-2 in the count, Murakami fouled out to first.
Clarissa Reynoso singled to begin the bottom of the seventh. Mariah Melendez ran for Reynoso and advanced to second on a Zoe Richards sac bunt. Melendez attempted to score on Alexa Demarse's ball to third. Freijanes, the shortstop, fielded the ball in short left field and threw out Melendez for out number two. Pinch-hitter Teagan Dobson grounded out 3-1 to send the game into extra innings.
After throwing 149 pitches, Cecil was relieved by Kala Simpson. Vargas Sandoval singled and moved to second on an error by UCSD third baseman Sophia Real. Freijanes' successfully sacrificed Vargas Sandoval to third. Nunez hit a grounder to Real, who threw home to retire Vargas Sandoval, who was moving on contact. Nunez advanced to second on a Simpson wild pitch. Whatman walked to bring up Carman, who doubled to right center to drive in both runners.
Eng, the Tritons' leadoff hitter, reached on an infield single to begin the bottom of the eighth. Hassis reached on an error that allowed Eng to move to third. Allie Gardiner relieved Carranco and allowed a Bosinger sac fly to score Eng. Aguirre flew out to second. Real grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice for the final out of the night.
Carman posted three of the eight CSUN hits. She was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Sandoval Vargas was 2-for-2 coming off the bench. Carranco improved to 7-7 on the year. She scattered seven hits, struck out four, and walked one in seven innings. Gardiner needed 11 pitches to earn her third save of the year.
Eng led the Tritons as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Cecil struck out seven and walked three during her stint.
UP NEXT
CSUN (23-22, 14-8 Big West) and UCSD (18-29, 8-14 Big West) conclude the series Saturday. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
