FRESNO, Calif. - Antoine Sale fired rounds of 66 and 70 to pace the CSUN men's golf team to a top-10 start after two rounds of the Nick Watney Invitational Monday at Fort Washington Country Club.
Sale, coming off a top-10 finish in his CSUN debut at Air Force two weeks ago, had seven birdies in a blistering opening round 66. Opening on the No. 10 tee, he had four birdies to make the turn at 4-under. Three more birdies, along with a pair of bogeys, would move him to 5-under on the round. Sale then added four more birdies, 11 pars and three bogeys in 1-under in round two.
At 6-under 136, Sale heads into Tuesday's final round six strokes off the pace set by UC Irvine's Darien Zhao and Connor Reis Saint Mary's who lead at 14-under 128. The Gaels hold the team lead through 36 holes at 25-under 543, six shots better than Sacramento State (549).
CSUN carded rounds of 284-278 on Monday and sits ninth in the 14-team field at 6-under 562. The Matadors will begin the final round just six shots out of the top five.
CSUN SCORES
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JIM BRACKEN
"This is a good golf course, but there's plenty of birdie opportunities out there. We just need to be a little more consistent, we made too many bogeys and doubles today. The good thing is we're capable of shooting 15 or 20-under as a team tomorrow."
The Matadors will be paired with Utah State, Utah Valley, and Southern Utah for the final round which gets underway Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m.
