CSUN Tennis Completes Busy Weekend at Beach Winter Invite

LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis opened the spring season this past weekend at the Beach Tennis Winter Invite at Long Beach State. CSUN collected nine total victories, seven of which in singles play on Friday. Rain washed away Saturday's matches but the Matadors resumed play on Sunday with six more wins, three on the doubles side and three on the singles end.
FRIDAY'S COMPETITION
On day one, CSUN would shine in singles play, notching seven victories over 10 total matches with Pacific. Senior Victoria Santibañez Luna would rally to win in three sets over Alexis Sam, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 while sophomore Emma Moratalla Sanz beat Indiya McCleod in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). Sophomore Tallia Harper also won in straight sets, knocking off Megan Carmichael 6-0, 6-3. Junior Nicole West outlasted Milena Mayorova in three sets, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and freshman Madison Shepperson won her first singles match of the spring season by defeating Elizaveta Mladentseva, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. CSUN closed out singles play with two more straight set victories as sophomore Sofia Dermenjyan defeated Zara Fung, 6-1, 6-4, and junior Cindy Ung downed Leyanne Hirota, 6-1, 6-3.
The Matadors would drop three of four doubles matches to Long Beach State on Friday with Santibañez Luna and Ung picking up CSUN's lone win, 6-1. CSUN also played one doubles match against Pacific, claiming a victory with the combination of Shepperson and West (6-4).
SUNDAY'S COMPETITION
CSUN was matched up with Pacific in doubles action on Sunday as the Tigers won three of five matches. Santibañez Luna and Ung kept up their winning ways with another doubles win over a team from the Tigers by a 7-5 decision while Harper and Moratalla Sanz were also winners by a 6-4 final. CSUN would also pick up a doubles win over Nevada with the team of Dermenjyan and sophomore Vitoria Solis Urdiales winning 6-3.
The Matadors were paired with Nevada in singles competition with the Wolf Pack posting seven wins compared to two wins for CSUN. Dermenjyan continued her strong weekend with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Nicolette Fuhr. Freshman Elena Goodman would notch the other Matador win over Mia Miranda (6-4, 6-0). Junior Jacqueline O'Neill registered a singles win as well over Pacific's Zara Fung (6-3, 3-6, 10-6).

"This weekend was a great way to get the spring going and to have Elena and Madison start their collegiate careers. We had ups and downs but competed on every court.
"We're working on getting healthy in some key spots and making our bodies and minds ready for the upcoming season."
