CSUN Hosts UC Riverside to Open Spring Dual Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis hosts its first spring dual when the Matadors take on UC Riverside in the Big West opener on Thursday at 2 p.m. The Matadors will then travel to Santa Clara to take on San Francisco on Friday at 3 p.m. and the host Broncos on Sunday at noon. The match between CSUN and Santa Clara will stream live on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN last competed at the Beach Tennis Winter Invite held on the campus of Long Beach State from Jan. 19-21. CSUN would collect 15 wins in total over the weekend, 10 on the singles side and five on the doubles side.
The Matadors beat Pacific in seven of 10 singles contests while CSUN doubles teams lost three of four to Long Beach State and picked up a win over Pacific. Saturday's competition was washed away due to rain but action resumed on Sunday where the Matadors would fall in three of five doubles matches to Pacific. CSUN though notched a doubles win over Nevada on Sunday. In singles action on the final day, CSUN dropped seven of nine matches to Nevada but picked up one more singles decision over Pacific.
The combination of Victoria Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung led CSUN with two doubles wins while Sofia Dermenjyan had the most singles wins with two.
A LOOK BACK AT 2023
CSUN is coming off an outstanding 2023 campaign that culminated in the program's first postseason berth since 2001. The Matadors finished with an overall 17-7 record, the team's most wins in 12 seasons, and went 6-3 in Big West play. Among the team's many season highlights, CSUN defeated three future NCAA Tournament teams and handed UC Santa Barbara, the 2022 Big West champion, two losses. The Matadors would compete in the inaugural Universal Tennis NIT following the regular season.Â
CSUN ROSTER AT A GLANCE
CSUN brings back 11 returners from last season's spring roster. Three All-Big West honorees are among the returning crop including sophomore Angela Ho who was named to the first team in doubles. Graduate Sasha Turchak and junior Yuliia Zhytelna both return after earning second team accolades in singles while the tandem also received an honorable mention in doubles.
Other returners include senior Victoria Santibañez Luna, juniors Jacqueline O'Neill, Jasmine Tolmoyan and Cindy Ung, and sophomores Sofia Dermenjyan, Tallia Harper, Emma Moratalla Sanz and Vitoria Solis Urdiales.Â
New to the team this season is Santa Monica College transfer Nicole West along with freshmen Elena Goodman, Annette Robertson, Madison Shepperson and Sydney Wilson.
SCOUTING UC RIVERSIDE
The Highlanders are 1-7 on the season with an 0-2 mark in Big West play. Already this week, UCR has played twice, falling to Idaho 4-3 and defeating Ottawa-Arizona 7-0. Last season, the Highlanders finished 2-16 overall and 0-9 in conference action. The team's doubles duo of Maya Youssef and Crystal Kim are 2-0 while Kei Kato has the team's lone singles win in dual action.
Series History: CSUN is 42-1 all-time against UC Riverside in women's tennis. The Matadors are on a current 19-match winning streak. Last season, CSUN knocked off the Highlanders 7-0 in Riverside.
SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO
The Dons are 2-4 on the season and come in with a four-match losing streak. Last week, USF fell to Cal Poly 6-1. In 2023, San Francisco had a 12-10 overall record. In singles action this year, Azaria Hayes and Alicia Yue are 3-3 on the year. The tandem of Hana Gamracy and Erin Richardson are 3-0 in doubles play.
Series History: CSUN is 8-0 all-time against USF but the teams have not played since 2009.
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA
The Broncos have gone 2-1 on the year with the team's most recent win coming last Saturday at UC Irvine, 4-3. Santa Clara would go 0-18 during the 2023 season. Varya Zlotnik and JennaMarie Gordon have three dual wins in singles play while the tandem of Velizara Fileva and Gordon are 2-0 in dual play as a doubles team.
Series History: CSUN holds a 6-4 record against Santa Clara all-time. The teams met last season in Santa Clara with the Broncos coming out top 4-2.
