CSUN Drops Battle at Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSUN fell to Cal State Bakersfield 70-54 in the Icardo Center on Thursday night. Kayanna Spriggs led the way for the Matadors with 11 points. She was followed by Amiyah Ferguson and Rachel Harvey who scored nine each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors opened the game with a 3-pointer by Ana Carolina De Jesus. CSUN continued its momentum with a layup by Erica Adams for a 5-0 lead. The Roadrunners scored one point before Spriggs and Laney Amundsen continued to make baskets, bringing the score to 9-1. The Roadrunners caught a second wind as they went on a 6-0 run. The Matadors made sure to hold them back as Harvey and Ferguson increased CSUN's lead to 14-7. The Roadrunners managed another free throw, but Harvey closed out the quarter with a final layup in the last 30 seconds, giving CSUN a 16-8 lead through one quarter.

CSUN returned to the court strong to start the second quarter as Adams made another layup. The Roadrunners began to trade shots as the Matadors and Roadrunners matched each other. Ferguson capped the Matadors with a 3-pointer just under the fourth minute, bringing the Matadors to 25-18. The Roadrunners began to close the distance as they went on an 13-2 run as they overtook CSUN 31-27.

The Matadors refused to fold as De Jesus made a layup and free throw, bringing the score to a one-point deficit. The Roadrunners refused to let the Matadors pass them as they went on a 21-8 run, claiming the third quarter with a final score of 51-38. The Roadrunners opened the final quarter with a field goal, but Ferguson matched the basket within 20 seconds. Ferguson, Talo Li-Uperesa, and Kaitlyn Elsholz each traded baskets with the Roadrunners, but the Matadors still trailed 64-47. Elsholz and Spriggs made three baskets within a minute. The late rally though fell short as the Roadrunners took the game.

CSUN returns home to take on the UC Irvine Anteaters on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Premier America Credit Union Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
