CSUN Drops 67-63 Decision to UC Irvine

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball fell to the Anteaters of UC Irvine by a score of 67-63 on Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Three Matadors scored double digits in points. Ana Carolina De Jesus led the way for the Matadors with 12 points. Laney Amundsen and Erica Adams recorded 10 points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Anteaters opened the game with two layups. De Jesus fired back with a layup to cut the deficit to 4-2 early on. UC Irvine scored another layup, but Adams and De Jesus closed the distance to 6-6. The Anteaters though took the lead with a 5-0 run. Adams and Rachel Harvey closed the distance with a jumper and a layup as they brought CSUN to within 11-10. The Matadors stayed close as De Jesus and Talo Li-Uperesa traded shots with the Anteaters. UC Irvine led after the first quarter 19-17.
CSUN opened the second quarter with two free throws, tying the game at 19-19. The Anteaters would go on a 6-0 run, taking the lead back. The Matadors didn't fold as Amiyah Ferguson made a layup, bringing the Matadors to within 25-21 then Amundsen followed with her own layup. The Anteaters tried pulling away, but Harvey and De Jesus kept the game close with a score at 31-26 with 2:46 to play. Adams kept the momentum going and Kaitlyn Elsholz topped the Matadors with a 3-pointer as the first half closed with a tie, 31-31.
The Matadors opened the third quarter with a jumper and a layup by Amundsen for a 35-31 lead. After the Anteaters tied the game, the Matadors took back the lead with a jumper by Kayanna Spriggs bringing the score to 39-37. Elsholz continued the momentum with another basket extending the lead to 41-37 with 2:02 left in the third quarter. Ferguson struck next with a jumper as the Matadors climbed to a 43-39 lead. The Anteaters struck next, but the Matadors led after three quarters, 44-42.
UC Irvine opened the fourth quarter, tying the game at 44-44. The Anteaters took the lead with a 3-pointer, but the Matadors fired back with a layup. UC Irvine tried pulling away, but the Matadors stayed close with a jumper from De Jesus. Adams fired another basket as she and De Jesus tied the game at 52-52. Spriggs struck next with a layup as CSUN took the lead at 54-52 with 5:23 to play. The Anteaters stayed close as they traded baskets with the Matadors. UC Irvine extended to a 62-59 lead, but CSUN closed the difference with a layup by Amundsen as she brought the score to 63-61. UC Irvine stretched its lead to four, but Adams struck with a layup in the last 36 seconds. UCI would miss on its next possession, however, the Anteaters collected a timely offensive rebound and secured the win at the free throw line.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"The word for today was calm. Coach told us to be calm coming into the game and we were reminding each other of it throughout the game. Although we had a couple slip ups with turnovers here and there, I think we did a pretty good job of breaking the press."

CSUN will be celebrating Girls and Women in Sports Day when it takes on UC San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
