CSUN Loses Battle Against UC San Diego

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball fell to the UC San Diego Tritons 53-52 on Thursday night. Erica Adams led the Matadors in scoring with 11 points. She was followed by Laney Amundsen with nine and Talo Li-Uperesa with eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons began the game strong as they went on a 4-0 run before Adams and Kayanna Spriggs tied the game. UC San Diego kept their momentum going as it made a few more baskets, raising its score to 9-4. Kaitlyn Elsholz disrupted their effort with a 3-pointer in the fourth minute. The Tritons didn't stay down as they went on a 7-0 run before Amiyah Ferguson made a free throw with a minute left on the clock.

UC San Diego struck first in the second quarter with a jumper. The Tritons continued to pull away, but Spriggs and Ferguson brought the game back to a 10-point deficit with a score of 20-10. UC San Diego fought as it went on a 12-6 run to take the first half 32-16.

The Matadors refused to fold as Adams opened the third quarter with two layups. She was followed by Elsholz who made a 3-pointer. The Tritons tried interrupting, but Adams flew by with another layup. UC San Diego made another basket, but Amundsen struck fired back with two 3-pointers. Li-Uperesa made another layup for the Matadors. The Tritons couldn't keep their distance as Li-Uperesa closed the quarter at 42-34 with a free throw in the final three seconds.

Spriggs opened the fourth quarter with a layup. Ferguson followed with a 3-pointer as the pair chipped away at the Tritons' lead. UC San Diego responded with a basket, but Spriggs fired back. The Tritons' defense tried to keep up, but Ana Carolina De Jesus and Laney Amundsen brought the game to 48-45. Rachel Harvey tied the game for CSUN with just under five minutes left. The Tritons struck back as they took the lead once more. Li-Uperesa didn't let them keep it for long as she tied it once more within 30 seconds. UC San Diego made another basket, but it was Adams who tied it with just 51 seconds left. The Tritons took the lead on a free throw with four seconds remaining. Amundsen tried for a buzzer beater in the last second of the game, but the shot just rimmed out.
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN will be hitting the road to play UC Riverside on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. in the SRC Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

- CSUN drops to 2-18 overall and 0-10 in Big West play while UC San Diego improves to 9-12 overall and 5-5 in conference.
- The Tritons made more field goals with 18 to the Matadors' 17. CSUN had the higher field goal percentage with 29.8 to UC San Diego's 26.5
- CSUN also had more 3-pointers (7-6), on court points (41-35), steals (9-8), and points in the paint (18-14).
- The Matadors also outscored the Tritons in the third and fourth quarter: 10-18 and 11-18.
- Talo Li-Uperesa has a new career high with five steals in a single game.
