CSUN Hosts Hawai'i and UC San Diego in Big West Matches

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer continues Big West play with a pair of home matches this week. The Matadors take on Hawai'i on Thursday evening before facing UC San Diego on Sunday. Both matches will kick off at 7:05 p.m. with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Matadors earned a split last week to move to 1-1-1 in Big West play with a 3-8-1 overall record. The week opened with a 1-0 victory at Long Beach State on Thursday. Yoshi Rubalcaba netted the only goal of the match against the Beach, scoring in the sixth minute while the Matador defense held on the rest of the way with goalkeeper Riley Liebsack posting five saves. The win over the Beach was CSUN's first in Long Beach since the 2012 season.
CSUN would drop its Sunday match at defending Big West champion UC Irvine by a 2-1 score. UCI opened up the scoring with a sixth-minute goal before CSUN squared the game up in the 12th minute when Rubalcava assisted freshman Kayden Perigo for the goal. The Anteaters though reclaimed the lead in the 30th minute on a free kick and led the rest of the way. The Matadors earned a penalty kick in the 86th minute, but Paige Califf's shot was saved. Liebsack finished with four saves in front of the goal for CSUN.
BIG WEST SEASON
After this week's matches, CSUN will reach the halfway point of the Big West schedule. Through three games, CSUN has collected four points in conference play and sit three points back of first-place UC Santa Barbara at seven points. A total of nine Big West teams have recorded a win as first place and the ninth seed are separated by just four points.
CSUN IN THE BIG WEST RANKINGS
The Matadors enter play this week ranked second in the Big West in team save percentage (.788) and tied for second in saves (70). As a team, CSUN is tied for sixth in the conference in shutouts with two while the team is eighth in goals allowed with 18. Individually, junior Yoshi Rubalcava is now tied for third place in game-winning goals (2) and freshman Jordyn Canister ranks in the 10th place in shots on goal (11). Liebsack leads the Big West and ranks ninth nationally in saves (67) while she is second in saves per game (5.58).Â
MATADOR LEADERS
Yoshi Rucabalcava tops CSUN with three goals scored as she enters the week with three tallies over the last five matches. Rubalcaba also leads the squad with eight points and shares the assist lead with senior Ashly Torres with two helpers. Junior Cailey Jackson is a close second to Rubalcaba in the goal department with two tallies while Jordyn Canister is first on the team with 20 shots to go with one goal. Freshman Kayden Perigo and junior Jackie Victorio have the other two CSUN goals this season.
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT
The Matadors played in two more close games in last week's action. Through 12 games, CSUN has now played in eight matches decided by one goal, posting a 3-5 record in those games. Five of the last seven matches have been one-goal decisions with a 1-1 draw mixed in over that span. CSUN's defense has been a key factor in helping to stay close with the opposition as the Matadors have allowed six goals over the past six games after previously surrendering 12 over the team's first six matches.
SCOUTING HAWAI'I
The Rainbow Wahine are 6-6 this season with a 2-0 Big West record. Winners of four straight, Hawai'i knocked off Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 last week while the team has a 2-1 victory over UC Davis as well earlier in September. The Bows have played just three road matches thus far, going 1-2 in those contests. Prior to the season, Hawai'i was picked to finish tied for seventh place in the conference standings. Brynn Mitchell and Nalani Damacion are tied for the team lead in goals with four apiece while Mitchell tops the team with nine points. As a team, Hawai'i ranks in second place in goals (17) and points (47) as a total of eight Wahine have scored at least one goal. At goalkeeper, Kennedy Justin has seen the most time on the field, posting 42 saves with a 1.52 goals-against-average.
Series History: CSUN leads Hawai'i 11-7-1 in the all-time series, but the Bows have won the last two meetings. Last season, Hawai'i prevailed 2-1 at home with Ashly Torres scoring the lone CSUN tally. The Matadors' last win in the series was in 2021 in a 3-2 win at Hawai'i.

The Tritons are 2-8-2 on the season with a 0-2-1 conference record. UCSD has dropped its last three matches after falling last week to UC Santa Barbara (2-1) and Long Beach State (4-3). The team's point in Big West play was the result of a 0-0 draw with UC Irvine on Sept. 19. On the road, UCSD has gone 1-4-1 on the year. Prior to the season, UC San Diego was picked to finish tied for seventh with Hawai'i. Raquel Kalpakoff is tied for third place in the Big West in goals with five to go with 11 points. Courtney Hilliard tops the squad with 12 points while she has four goals and four assists. In goal, Bella Barretto leads the team with a 1.38 GAA and 27 saves to go with two shutouts.
Series History: CSUN is seeking its first ever win over UC San Diego. The Tritons have won all four meetings since joining the Big West. The teams played a high-scoring duel in La Jolla last season with UC San Diego coming out on top 5-3.
