CSUN Drops Contest Against No. 3 USC

Los Angeles, Calif -- CSUN Women's Basketball fell to the No. 3 USC Trojans by a score of 124-39 on Tuesday night at the Galen Center. Laini Dahlin led all Matador scorers with 11 points with nine of those coming from deep. Erika Aspajo scored in double figures as well, as she finished with 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
USC commanded the court early on in this one. CSUN couldn't hold onto the ball, as the Women of Troy forced 16 turnovers to start the game. USC was catching fire from beyond the arc as well, as the team hit five threes. Talia von Oelhoffen drained three of the shots from outside, A couple layups from Erika Aspajo and Kelly Tumlin accounted for the scoring in the first for CSUN.Â

In the second quarter USC got off to a hot start and never looked back. The team began the quarter on a 28-0 run. Nnenna Orji drove in for a layup to get the Matadors their first points of the quarter. Kelly Tumlin quickly followed with a pull up three to get her first points of the game. Aspajo had a fast break layup which got the Matadors on a 7-0 run. The Women of Troy would end the quarter on a Kayleigh Heck layup, as CSUN trailed USC 60-13 heading into the intermission.

To begin the second half, USC started hot again, scoring the quarter's first 13 points. An Erica Adams free throw along with a Nnenna Orji layup cut USC's lead to 76-16. Balanced scoring from the USC offense was the story with four players scoring in double figures. USC outscored CSUN 37-7 in the third quarter. The Women of Troy went 5-7 from three coming out of the halftime break. Aspajo was a bright spot in the offense as she tallied 10 points and was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.

To start the fourth, Laini Dahlin hit a three from the corner, her first points of the game. USC hit its first three shots of the period, as the Women of Troy extended their lead to 103-23. Dahlin was a bright spot in the fourth, she went on to hit two more three pointers as CSUN kept on fighting. The Matadors didn't show quit, as the fourth quarter proved to be the best quarter of the night. CSUN shot 35.7 percent in the quarter, added 17 points and hit four three pointers in the final period of the game.Â

Turnovers were the story for CSUN, as they gave the ball away 43 times.

USC shot very well from the field, shooting 60.8 percent from the field and knocked down.

- CSUN was once again solid from the charity stripe, as the Matadors made 10 out of 12 free throws.
- Aspajo notched her second straight game scoring in double figures, 14 against Utah State on Nov. 8 and 10 against USC.
- Aspajo was also the team leader in assists (4) and rebounds (4) and tied for most blocks with (1).
- The bench was a contributing factor as CSUN tallied 29 points from non-starters.
- USC's Juju Watkins led all scorers with 21 points.
