CSUN On Road Again Against Fresno State, San Jose State

Game Notes
NORTHRIDGE, Calif – CSUN Women's Basketball (2-1, 0-0 Big West) is back on the road again for two away games. For the first game, CSUN travels to Fresno State to take on the Bulldogs at the Save Mart Center on Friday, Nov. 22, with the game set to tip off at 6 p.m.
In the second contest, the Matadors will battle San Jose State on Sunday, Nov. 24 at Provident Credit Union Event Center. That game will take place at 2 p.m.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN only played one game last week, Nov. 12, against No. 3 USC where they fell to the Trojans 124-39 at the Galen Center. USC commanded the court early on in this one. The Women of Troy forced 16 turnovers to start the game.
In the second quarter USC got off to a hot start and never looked back. The team began the quarter on a 28-0 run.
After trailing most of the game, CSUN showed fight in the final quarter, as the last quarter proved to be the best of the night. CSUN shot 35.7%, added 17 points (most in the game) and hit four three pointers in the final period of the contest.
STELLAR SHOWING FROM THE SPANIARD
Erica Aspajo has been a bright spot for the Matadors since transferring from Georgian Court University this offseason. The junior from Barcelona was impressive in CSUN's last outing against USC. Aspajo scored 10 points in the defeat, her second consecutive game in double-figures. She also led the team in assists (4) and rebounds (4) and tied for most blocks with (1) against the Women of Troy.
FREE POINTS ARE THE BEST POINTS
In three games this season, CSUN is currently shooting 78.5% from the charity stripe. CSUN shot 10-12 against USC, 22-30 against Utah State, and 12-14 against La Sierra. Senior Erica Adams is currently shooting 90% from the line (9-10) as she leads the Matadors in that category. Aspajo is not far behind as she is currently shooting 85.7% (12-14). Four other players, (Yves Cox, Laini Dahlin, Morgan Edwards, Nnenna Orji) are all shooting 75% as well.
DON'T SLEEP ON THE BENCH
The CSUN non-starters proved to be a factor in the last game against USC. The bench scored 29 of the Matadors' 39 points. Laini Dahlin tallied 11 points off the bench, which not only led the non-starters in scoring, but led the team in overall scoring as well. Freshman Karsen Marshall added six points as well, going a perfect 2-2 from the field in only five minutes of play.
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE
The Bulldogs have started the 2024-25 campaign 4-1 and are currently riding a three-game winning streak. In that winning streak they have defeated two Big West schools. On Nov. 11 Fresno State defeated UC Riverside 63-53. In their last game, it defeated UC San Diego by a similar score, 65-53.
Fresno State is led in scoring by junior Mia Jacobs, who enters the matchup against the Matadors with 19.4 PPG and 9.8 RPG. Jacobs was also named Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week this past week. In over 100 minutes of play, she shot 51.5 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs have also seen good production from sophomore Kylee Fox, who dropped a career high 21 points in their last matchup against UCSD.
Series History: Fresno State currently leads the series 16-7 against the Matadors. The last time these two squared off was Nov. 23, 2021. CSUN won that contest 81-75 in Fresno.
SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE
The Spartans are 2-2 on the young season with wins over Xavier and San Francisco State. They also matched up against fellow Big West opponent UC Santa Barbara but came up short in a 86-76 defeat.
SJSU is currently led in scoring by junior center Finau Tonga, who is currently averaging 14.5 PPG. Tonga has put up double-digit scoring numbers in all four games so far this season. She is followed by sophomore guard Sydni Summers who tallies 10.3 PPG.
Bench scoring is a strength for the Spartans. In their last game against the Gauchos, SJSU saw 33 points from non-starters.
Series History: San Jose State currently leads the series 9-6 against CSUN. The last time these two squared off was Dec. 18, 2023. SJSU won that contest 70-53 at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
