NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Women's Basketball dropped a competitive contest against the Pepperdine Waves, 84-58 Wednesday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Erica Adams and Kelly Tumlin each had 10 points to lead the Matadors while freshman Karsen Marshall added eight points off the bench.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first quarter both teams got off to a hot shooting start. CSUN shot 50% from the floor, going 7-14, while Pepperdine added seven field goals as well, off of 16 shots. CSUN shot very well from three in the first to boot, knocking in four of five from downtown. Morgan Edwards, Tumlin, Adams and Laini Dahlin all contributed to the barrage of threes.Â
Â
However, Pepperdine seemed to match every CSUN blow with one of its own. The Waves kept up with the Matadors from start to finish, as the score was 21-20 in favor of Pepperdine heading into the second quarter.
Â
In the second quarter, Pepperdine upped its defense while the Waves kept making shots. CSUN defended better from three, as the away team only shot 25% from beyond the arc in the second. It was the two point shots that haunted CSUN, as the Waves went 8-13 in shots that weren't three pointers.
Â
Pepperdine extended its lead to 10, but CSUN then went on a 6-0 run thanks to Kayla Hopson hitting a driving layup, Adams hitting a turnaround jumper, and a Tumlin layup to cut the lead back to four with 2:18 remaining in the half. Pepperdine would then go on a 9-0 run before Adams hit two free throws going into halftime.
Â
2ND HALF
Jenna Kilty came out of the break looking to fire from the outside. The graduate student from Oakland hit three shots from deep, with all three of them being assisted by Adams who finished the night with seven assists. The last of her three pointers cut the Pepperdine lead to 11 at 52-41 before the Waves called a timeout with 4:23 remaining in the third quarter. Pepperdine then followed with a 12-6 run to push the lead to 65-50 with 0:39 remaining in the period. Malia Mastora, who led all scorers with 18, made a three during the run.
Â
CSUN ended up tallying 20 points in the third, matching its first quarter total. The Matadors had one of their best shooting quarters of the season from the outside, as CSUN hit six out of eight shots from three. Pepperdine was also efficient from the field, hitting 10-15 (66.7%) of its shots as the third quarter ended 67-50 in favor of the away team
Â
In the final quarter, the Matadors were getting good looks, but the shots didn't fall. Pepperdine went on a 10-3 run (5-5 from the field) before a Marshall three pointer cut the lead back to 79-56 with 4:11 left to play. Chloe Sotell then drained a three as the Waves didn't look back. CSUN ended the quarter by making two field goals on 11 shots. The final score ended up being 84-58 resulting in CSUN's first home defeat this season.
Â
"I think we did a much better job in the first half sticking to the game-plan. We trusted our defense. We made them work for their shots. Unfortunately, that didn't happen in the second half. Pepperdine did a great job of executing."
