CSUN Secures Opening Night Victory Against La Sierra

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball secured a 70-56 victory on opening night against the La Sierra Golden Eagles on Monday at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Erica Adams had a huge second half as she ended the night with 12 points and 10 rebounds, the first career double-double for the senior from Oakland.Â

Head coach Angie Ned celebrated her first career head coaching victory with the Matadors. Morgan Edwards added 10, Kelly Tumlin and Nnenna Orji scored nine apiece in the win.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED

1ST HALF
After a 10-4 run to start the game for the Matadors, the Golden Eagles stormed ahead and grabbed a 15-13 lead with 3:44 left in the 1st quarter. Kaydn Mew started off the game strong for La Sierra, scoring seven of the team's first 17 points.

The final score after the first quarter was 25-15 in favor of the road team.. The scoring for La Sierra was spread around fairly evenly. Julianna Horne was perfect from three, hitting two shots from deep.

Laini Dahlin got the scoring started for CSUN in the 2nd period. Kayla Hopson scored her first points on an and-1 layup which cut the Golden Eagles lead to seven at 29-22.

CSUN then went on a 7-0 run capped off by an Yves Cox layup. The run cut the Golden Eagles lead to five.

La Sierra bumped their lead back to 10, 36-26 off back to back buckets by Sonia Randall.

The first half ended with good defense from both teams. Horne made a three from the corner to extend the Golden Eagles lead to 13. Nnenna Orji hit two free throws right before the buzzer sounded for halftime. The Matadors went cold for three in the 2nd period, going 0-8 which ultimately led to La Sierra's halftime lead. 39-28.

2ND HALF
CSUN went on a furious 17-0 run to start the quarter. A couple three pointers by Kelly Tumlin were fundamental in the Matadors getting back into this contest and taking the lead 43-42, heading into the first media timeout.Â

CSUN defense was key in this contest. The Matadors forced 25 turnovers and tallied 28 points from the Golden Eagles miscues.

After going cold from three in the first half, the Matadors turned on the jets from deep, as CSUN shot 50% from the outside in the third. The Matadors outscored the Golden Eagles 21-5 in the quarter and turned the game around coming out of halftime. Key buckets by Tumlin and Nnenna Orji fueled the comeback.Â

The Matadors started off the 4th quarter on an 8-0 run before a timeout by La Sierra. Marshall hit a three from the corner to get things going. Erica Adams then drove in for a layup, followed by a corner three from Tumlin, her third of the contest.

In a quick turnaround for La Sierra, three consecutive layups cut the lead back to eight, before a timeout from CSUN at the 5:06 mark.Â

Adams got it going after the break, hitting four of her last five shots to get the lead back to 12.Â

CSUN defense was key in the final quarter, as the Golden Eagles were held scoreless over the final 3:39 of the game.Â

CSUN shot a quarter best 46.7% from the field in the 4th, which led to the victory.
