CSUN secured a 70-56 victory on opening night against the La Sierra Golden Eagles on Monday at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Erica Adams had a huge second half as she ended the night with 12 points and 10 rebounds, the first career double-double for the senior from Oakland.Â
Â
Head coach Angie Ned celebrated her first career head coaching victory with the Matadors. Morgan Edwards added 10, Kelly Tumlin and Nnenna Orji scored nine apiece in the win.
Â
The first half ended with good defense from both teams. The Matadors went cold for three in the 2nd period, going 0-8 which ultimately led to La Sierra's halftime lead. 39-28.
Â
In the second half, the Matadors came out of the gates strong, as they started the third on a 17-0 run led by a couple three-pointers from Kelly Tumlin. CSUN defense was key in this contest. The Matadors forced 25 turnovers and tallied 28 points from the Golden Eagles miscues.Â
Â
CSUN outscored La Sierra 42-17 in the 2nd half.Â
Â
SCOUTING UTAH STATE
The Aggies sport a much different look than last year's team which finished 5-25 overall and 2-16 in the Mountain West. A total of 10 newcomers make up the roster including three transfers and seven freshmen while head coach Wesley Brooks in his first season at Utah State. Senior guard Cheyenne Stubbs is the team's top returner and scorer from last season where she averaged 16.1 points to go with 4.0 rebounds per game and 52 steals. The Aggies were picked to finish 11th in the 2024 Mountain West Preseason Poll.
Â
Utah State lost its opener against Kansas City Monday night, by a score of 80-77. Stubbs was the top scorer in the defeat, and someone to watch out for, as she tallied 28 points and four steals. The Aggies tallied 38 points in the paint in the loss, as well as 29 points off of turnovers. CSUN will look to limit their turnovers as it seems Utah State will capitalize. The Aggies like to launch shots from deep, as they attempted 30 three pointers in their first match of the season.
Â
Series History: Utah State holds a narrow 4-2 lead in the all-time series with CSUN. The Matadors defeated the Aggies last season by a 79-64 margin at Premier America Credit Union Arena with Erica Adams totaling 17 points.
