NORTHRIDGE, Calif - CSUN Women's Basketball fell to California Baptist in heartbreaking fashion 73-71 after a thrilling comeback from 17 points down at Premier America Credit Union Arena on Wednesday. Morgan Edwards led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, 12 of which scored in the fourth quarter alone.Â
Â
Kelly Tumlin and Yves Cox both scored in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams came out swinging from deep early on, as 22 three-point shots were attempted in the first quarter alone. It was blow for blow as the Matadors knocked down five from distance only to be matched by CBU's seven made threes. CSUN got the early lead from a Tumlin three pointer to make it 8-3 with 6:32 left. After a former Matador Anaiyah Tu'ua three gained the lead for the Lancers at 9-8 at the 5:39 mark, CSUN quickly regained the lead via a Jenny Kilty shot from behind the arc.Â
Â
That would be the last CSUN lead of the quarter as California Baptist got on a shooting streak. Nhug Bosch Duran from the Lancers drained three from deep in the quarter as the score read 28-21 at the end of the period.
Â
In the second quarter, Edwards cut the Lancers' lead with a triple to make it 28-24 at the 9:38 mark. Following two made free throws from CBU, a Jenna Kilty shot from downtown cut the lead to three with 5:38 left in the half. After trading buckets, the Lancers went on a 7-1 run, ultimately ending in a 39-30 lead heading into the break. Scoring was way down in the second period. After a combined 49 points in the first, defense was the story in the second, as only 20 points were scored between both teams.
Â
2ND HALF
After two made free throws by the Matadors to get the scoring started, Cox hit a hook shot to cut the lead back to five at the 8:08 mark. Moments later, Kilty hit a three while Cox once again hit a layup to trim the lead to four at 43-39 with 6:56 left to go. The Lancers would then go on to have their biggest run of the night. CBU ended the third quarter on a 17-4 run which would result in the score being 60-46. Tumlin also hit a half-court buzzer beating three-point shot to send some momentum in the Matadors' direction.
Â
In the fourth quarter, CSUN played perhaps its best quarter of the young season. Erica Adams got the scoring started with a driving layup before Duran hit a triple. Two more made three throws bumped the lead back up to 17 at 65-48 with 6:14 left to go.Â
Â
The score saw little movement in either direction until Kelly Tumlin hit a shot from distance with four minutes remaining to make it 68-54. From there, the Matadors turned the game around with a late run. Edwards got fouled on a three-point made shot. The junior hit the free throw from the charity stripe to cut the lead to 10 with 3:13 left to play.
Â
In the next possession, Edwards again got fouled on a made shot, this time a driving layup. She would go on to make the free throw to cut the lead to seven with 2:48 left to go.
Â
After a made shot from the Lancers, Erica Adams wanted to join the and-one party as she got fouled on a made layup with 2:26 remaining. The senior would hit the free throw to cut the lead to six. Tumlin then hit a layup to cut the lead to four. After a made free throw from CBU, Edwards hit a shot from distance to get the lead to only two with just under a minute left to play. With 24 seconds left, CSUN called a time out and drew up a a play for Cox. She got a layup to tie the game with 10 seconds to go.Â
Â
In the final possession, CSUN played stellar defense but ultimately a bank shot from Tu'ua was the dagger to end the game in favor of the Lancers, 73-71.
"I think we just committed to doing the work. We had the plan and we just executed it well in the second half. We were just trusting the process, going one possession at a time. I am really proud of their effort and they got to see how good we can be if we play together. Unfortunately we just fell short, but there are a lot of positives from this game."
