CSUN Drops Decision at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball fell on the road against Long Beach State 86-62 on Saturday at Walter Pyramid. Erica Adams topped the team with 15 points while Kaitlyn Elsholz added 14 and Kayanna Spriggs tallied a career-high 17 rebounds to go with 11 points. CSUN stayed within striking distance in the first half, but the Beach took control in the second half to pull away with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Beach opened a 13-6 lead on a three from Lovely Sonnier. Long Beach State led by as many eight points in the first quarter (17-9) before the Matadors pulled to within five on a Talo Li-Uperesa jumper in the final minute of the first period. However, Sydney Woodley closed the quarter with a layup for a Beach 21-14 lead.
Earlier in the secon quarter, Woodley knocked down a three to extend the Beach lead to 26-14. Kaitlyn Elsholz stopped a 7-0 run with a basket while Laney Amundsen found the bottom of the net to pull CSUN to within 26-19 with 5:37 left before halftime. Arina Nikishina gave CSUN an offensive spark late in the quarter with back-to-back field goals, with her second jumper bringing CSUN to within 32-27. The Beach though earned their way to the free throw line late to extend to a 36-27 edge at intermission.
Nikishina scored again at the 8:56 mark of the third period, trimming the deficit to seven, but from then on it would be all Beach. Woodley and Casey Valenti-Paea each hit two threes as Long Beach State went on a 14-4 run. Erica Adams would slow the run with a basket, however, the Beach scored the 10 in a row to stretch the lead to 60-35 with 4:13 left in the third. The Matadors would continue to battle down the stretch of the period with Kaitlyn Elsholz and Erica Adams helping put together a 14-2 run to close the gap to 13. Savannah Tucker though ended the period with a basket to put the Beach ahead 65-49 through three quarters.
In the fourth, the Beach extended their lead back over 20 points. Patricia Chung caught fire from long range, making four consecutive threes as the lead swelled to 79-51. CSUN would fight to the final buzzer, but the Beach maintained their double-digit lead down the stretch.

- CSUN dropped to 2-23 overall and 0-15 in Big West play while Long Beach State improves to 10-14 overall and 5-9 in conference.
- The Matadors shot 39.1 percent for the night while going 4-of-15 from three (26.7 percent) and 8-of-19 from the free throw line (42.1 percent).
- The Beach finished shooting 40.5 percent while making 11-of-28 from three (39.3 percent) and 11-of-18 at the free throw line (61.1 percent).
- CSUN out-rebounded Long Beach State 51-44 on the night.
- Long Beach State outscored CSUN 40-15 in points off turnovers.
- Kayanna Spriggs has posted a career high in rebounds in back-to-back games. She posted a then career-high 16 rebounds in CSUN's previous game last Thursday.
