#25 CSUN Faces Four at Tina Finali Tournament

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (8-3) returns to Cal Lutheran to compete at the Tina Finali Tournament. The two-day event begins on Friday when the Matadors take on Cal State East Bay at 11:40 a.m. and No. 11 LMU at 3:40 p.m. The Matadors wrap up the invite on Saturday against Azusa Pacific at 1:50 p.m. and Cal Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for each match while the final match against Cal Lutheran will carry a live video stream.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN secured a pair of wins at the Cal Lutheran Invitational on Friday at Samuelson Aquatic Center. The Matadors knocked off host Cal Lutheran 10-7 in the morning match before coming from behind for a 13-7 win over the University of Toronto to close the day.
Helena Sandhagen scored seven combined goals while Shelby Hovanesian had four goals. In front of the cage, Samantha Bright was credited with two victories as she finished with nine total saves over the two contests.
TOP PERFORMERS
Dorottya Telek tops the team with 39 goals and 51 points heading into the weekend. Telek is also shooting an exceptional 62.5 percent from the field on the year. Helena Sandhagen is second on the team with 20 goals on 61.9 percent shooting while Anna Pal has netted 18 goals and Shelby Hovanesian has tallied 12. Pal is the team's assist leader with 24 and Hovaensian is the steal leader with 10.
In front of the cage, Meghan Lopez has a team-high 47 saves with a 9.76 goals-against-average while Samantha Bright has notched 38 saves to go with a 8.53 GAA.
TELEK'S RECORD CHASE
Center Dorottya Telek is on the doorstep of school history as she enters play 13 goals away from breaking the school record for career goals. Currently, Telek is third all-time in career goals with 217 while she only trails all-time record holder Madeleine Sanchez (229) and second-place goal scorer Allison Brookes (222). Telek has scored at least once in all nine matches she has played this season while she has multiple-scoring performances in eight contests. Already this season, Telek broke the CSUN single-game record with nine goals in the season opener versus California Baptist. Last season, Telek would set a single-season goal record with 101 goals.
SCOUTING CAL STATE EAST BAY
The Pioneers are 3-5 on the season with after dropping three of four at the Bronco Invitational. East Bay's wins this season include an early season 11-8 win over Santa Clara. In 2023, East Bay finished the year with a 16-15 record. Elise Whitworth has a team-best 12 goals followed by Rachel Heredia and Alex Andrist with 11 goals apiece. In goal, Daniela Passoni has registered 57 saves with a 10.48 goals-against-average.
Series History: CSUN is 11-0 against Cal State East Bay in water polo. The teams last met last season with CSUN coming out on top 10-5.
SCOUTING LMU
No. 11 LMU hold a 13-2 overall record with six consecutive victories. The team's two losses this season have come to top-15 teams. Last week, LMU knocked off UC San Diego (12-11), Toronto (16-3) and Whittier (17-10). In 2023, LMU went 15-15 overall and finished third at the Golden Coast Conference tournament. The team's top returning scorer this season is Ruth Arino Ruiz who netted 56 goals and 60 assists last season. In front of the cage, Madison Davis had 158 saves with a 12.78 GAA last year.
Series History: LMU leads CSUN 19-3 in the all-time series with the Lions posting two-straight wins. The teams played just two weeks ago with the Lions prevailing at home 16-8.

The Cougars have gone 5-6 this season. On Thursday, APU dropped a tight 12-11 decision to California Baptist, which snapped a three-match winning streak. In 2023, the Cougars posted a 14-13 overall record. Alexandra Akritidou tops the team with 26 goals and 34 points while Mica Schiavone has 18 tallies. Alex Airitam has racked up 67 saves with a 10.53 GAA in goal.
Series History: CSUN leads Azusa Pacific 14-0 in the all-time series. Earlier this season on Feb. 3, CSUN rallied for an 11-10 victory over APU in overtime behind a game-winning goal from Anna Pal.

The Regals are 1-7 on the season with their only win coming last week against Toronto by an 8-5 score. A season ago, Cal Lutheran finished at 12-15 overall with an 8-5 conference record in the SCIAC. Bethany Metcalfe sports a team-high 12 goals and 18 points while Katie Knight has hit the net nine times. Izzy De Souza has a team-best 51 saves in 168 minutes in front of the cage.
