2/24/2024 6:30:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.---CSUN's Dorottya Telek made school history by breaking the women's water polo program's career goal record while the Matadors would finish the weekend at 3-1 with two wins at the Tina Finali Tournament on Saturday. Telek also tied the single-game record at CSUN, a record she previously set earlier this season, in a 16-8 triumph over Azusa Pacific. The Matadors would close the day with a 13-7 win over host Cal Lutheran.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. AZUSA PACIFIC
Telek outscored Azusa Pacific on her own in the first match on Saturday. APU took an early 1-0 lead before Telek hit her first goal in the opening minute. The score would be tied up at 2-2 until Telek found the net again under the three-minute mark. A goal from Valeria Martinez followed by Telek's third tally extended the lead to 5-2, however, Martiza Ochoa hit a late goal to cut the lead to two after eight minutes. After a goal from Telek to open the second quarter, Martinez and Anna Pal each scored goals to extend the lead to 8-4 at intermission.
Telek powered CSUN's offense in the third period, scoring three of the team's four goals. Pal gave the Matadors a 13-6 lead to open the final period before Telek tied the career goal record at the 4:50 mark. After a Jessica Matkovich tally, Telek earned a penalty shot with 2:48 on the clock. Telek calmly found the net to break the goal record and give CSUN 16 goals in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CAL LUTHERAN
CSUN's momentum from the early game spilled over into the nightcap as the Matadors raced out to a five-goal first period. Tatum Scarry got the Matadors' offense started while Pal scored twice, Telek added another goal and goalkeeper Meghan Lopez beat the first quarter buzzer for a CSUN 5-2 lead. The Matadors would only score twice in the second quarter, but CSUN held the opposition to just one goal. Shelby Hovanesian and Helena Sandhagen provided the CSUN offense to help propel the team to a 7-3 lead at halftime.
The Regals though battled back in the third quarter, picking up the first two tallies before Sandhagen hit the net for CSUN. Katie Knight though scored another for Cal Lutheran on a power play to cut the CSUN lead to 8-6 through 24 minutes.
However, the Matadors took control over the final eight minutes of play. The quartet of Scarry, Hovanesian, Sandhagen and Pal all scored on even strength possessions while Jenna Olson hit another on a power play to complete a 5-0 run that put the game away.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Dodi Telek becomes the school's all-time leading scorer in true champion fashion. She's a natural leader and excellent ambassador to the program.
"First time this year we've put a whole game together [against Azusa Pacific]. A dominant victory and against a team we needed overtime to beat early in the season, so it was nice to win in such dominant fashion. Good progress all around.
"Playing two games in a day is a challenge and a true testament to the kind of shape we are in. We controlled the pace from start to finish against Cal Lutheran, ending with a 5-1 fourth quarter and really showing our potential. Five games next week, including two home games, so we'll get some rest and be ready to compete on Thursday."
