Phillips and Knight Win Individual Awards as CSUN Wraps Up MPSF Championships

SPOKANE, Wash.---CSUN Track & Field wrapped up the 2024 MPSF Indoor Championships on Monday at the Podium. The Matadors' men team collected two more individual titles and finished in third place as a team with 102 points. The CSUN women finished with 30 points and in ninth place at the meet.
The CSUN men's team were led again by David Phillips, Jr. and Trey Knight, who each won individual titles for the second consecutive day. Chase Mars nearly came away with the 60m title, finishing in second in the event while Bryson Williams had a third-place finish in the triple jump and Guillermo Lopez finished third in the shot put.
On the women's side, Arianna Alexander led the way with a second-place finish in the 60m while Anastasia Bampali had a strong showing in the triple jump with a fourth-place finish.
MEN
In running events, Phillips won the 400m with a personal record run time of 47.83, earning CSUN 10 points. That time put Phillips into fourth place all-time in CSUN history in the 400m. His performance comes a day after he won the 200m title with a school record time of 20.78. Also, in the 400m, Chris Pitts picked up two more points for CSUN by finishing fifth with a time of 48.18, which is the ninth best recorded time in CSUN history. Gabe Martinez also finished in the top 10 in the event as he was in ninth place at a 48.60 run time.

A day after breaking the school's 60m record, Mars fell just short of an individual title as he finished in second place with a time of 6.63 to earn CSUN eight points. Behind Mars, James Crawford ran 6.73 to finish in fourth place and post four additional team points.
Williams finished in third place in the triple jump at 15.14m (49-08.25), earning CSUN six points. Williams' jump is ranked ninth best in CSUN history. Tzu-Ting Chan placed in fifth in the event at 14.13m (46-04.25) to earn two team points.
In the throws, Knight capped off a banner indoor season by winning the shot put with a toss of 16.94m (55-7) to earn CSUN 10 points. On Sunday, Knight took home the weight throw title as well after registering a school record toss of 23.52m (77-2). Elsewhere in the shot put, Lopez would finish third with a toss of 16.72m (54-10.25) for six team points while Elijah Ignacio was right behind in fourth place at 16.53m (54-02.75) to pick up four team points.
In distance, Noah Contreras finished in fifth place in the 800m with a time of 1:52.60 to earn two team points. Contreras' time ranks as the eighth best in school history. Also in the 800m, Atticus Hall would finish in 10th place with a run time of 1:57.56.
Rounding out the races, Camilo Torres competed in the 3000m and ran an 8:44.85 to place 15th.
WOMEN
In the 60m, Alexander finished second with a season-best time of 7.43, earning eight points for the Matadors. Kaliyah Poston picked up two more points for CSUN, finishing in seventh place at 7.58. Two CSUN athletes posted new personal times in the 400m as Charis Wondercheck was just outside the top-15 in 16th place with a time of 58.36 while Jayden Lopes ran a time of 58.52 to finish 18th.
In the triple jump, Bampali earned CSUN five points with a leap of 11.84m (38-10.25) to finish in fourth place.
In distance races, Nicole Contreras posted a personal record time of 4:56.15 in the mile run to finish in sixth place. In addition to earning CSUN three points, Contreras posted the third-fastest mile run time in school history. Contreras also competed in the 3000m on Monday and ran a time of 10:37.53 to finish 38th.
Leann Hamilton just missed the top-10 in the 800m as she came in 11th place with a personal record of 2:16.98. Rachael Simpson also posted a new PR with a run of 2:17.98 to finish in 17th place in the event.
In the shot put, Brianna Kelpis finished in 11th place with a throw of 12.82m (42-0.75) while Emily Hutchinson was 13th with a toss of 12.77m (41-10.75) and Amani Britton finished 17th at 11.87m (38-11.50).
