CSUN Drops 64-54 Decision at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Basketball dropped a 64-54 decision to the UC Irvine Anteaters on Thursday evening in the Bren Events Center. Talo Li-Uperesa led the way for the Matadors by scoring 11 points.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors started strong as they opened the game with Kayanna Spriggs and Rachel Harvey making baskets for an early 4-0 lead. The Anteaters returned the favor with a 12-1 run before Harvey struck back. Erica Adams followed shortly after, but UC Irvine continued to make baskets. Laney Amundsen struck one last time for the Matadors as she made a 3-pointer with four seconds on the clock. The first quarter ended in the Anteaters' favor with a score of 19-12.
The second quarter opened silently as neither team scored for over 2 minutes. The Anteaters broke through first, but the Matadors took control with a 6-0 run. The final basket of the quarter for CSUN was a jumper by Arina Nikishina to bring the score to 21-18. The Anteaters took the first half at 28-18.
Kaitlyn Elsholz opened the quarter with a 3-pointer before the Anteaters went on an 8-0 run. Li-Uperesa, Adams, and Spriggs continued to trade shots with UC Irvine to try to chip away at the distance. Li-Uperesa made one last jumper with 31 seconds on the clock to bring the score to 44-35.Â
The Matadors opened the final quarter with a jumper from Nikishina. UC Irvine and CSUN proceeded to trade shots for six minutes as the Anteaters stayed in the lead with a score of 58-45. The Matadors refused to fold as they went on a 7-4 run, but the Anteaters claimed the game as CSUN couldn't close the distance.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN has its final road game against UC San Diego on Saturday, Mar. 2, at 2 p.m. in the LionTree Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
