EUGENE, Ore.---CSUN Track & Field sprinters Chase Mars and David Phillips, Jr. each advanced in the 200m at the 2024 United States Olympic Team Trials on Thursday evening at historic Hayward Field. Both Mars and Phillips will compete in the 200m semifinal round on Friday evening.
Both placed in Heat 4, Mars and Phillips finished fourth and fifth, respectively, out of the seven-athlete heat. Mars was 17th overall in round one with a time of 20.63 with Phillips finishing 19th at 20.68. A total of 27 athletes qualified for the semifinals.

In what has been a memorable first year with CSUN, Mars previously broke the school record in the 200m at the NCAA West Regional, finishing third with a time of 20.25. Mars also won the 200m title at the 2024 Big West Championships with a time of 20.52.
Phillips, a senior, had set a 200m school record with a time of 20.51 before Mars broke that mark at regionals. In the 2024 indoor season, Phillips won the MPSF 200m title with a time of 20.78.
Both Mars and Phillips made their debut at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Thursday.
ACCORDING TO ASSISTANT COACH JACOB YOWELL
"At a meet like this, it's all about 'survive and advance,' and that's exactly what Chase and DJ were able to do. All week, I could tell that the moment wasn't too big for either of them. They have carried themselves like they belong here at this meet, and for your first time that's half the battle. We will regroup and attack the semis tomorrow night the same way."
UP NEXT
