
CSUN Trio to Compete at 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Beginning Thursday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field will send three representatives to the 2024 United States Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore. beginning Thursday with the men's 200m dash round one where junior Chase Mars and senior David Phillips, Jr. will compete. The men's hammer throw qualifying round will be held on Friday with junior Trey Knight set for competition. The Olympic Team Trials evening sessions will be broadcast on NBC and USA with streaming of every event on Peacock.

Mars, who joined CSUN this season from NAIA Vanguard, posted a school record time in the 200m of 20.25 at the NCAA West Regional in Fayetteville, Ark. in May. His regional time finished third overall, qualifying him for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene earlier in the month where he finished in 19th place with a time of 20.59. Mars also competed as a member of the 4x100 relay team at nationals where he helped CSUN finish 13th with a time of 39.30 to earn Second Team All-American honors. Mars previously won the 200m title at the 2024 Big West Championships in May with a time of 20.52 while at the same event he broke the school record in the 100m dash (10.20).
Phillips qualified for the Olympic Trials after posting a then-school record time of 20.51 in the 200m at the USC Trojan Invite in March. He joined Mars as a member of the 4x100 relay team at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene and helped the team earn Second Team All-American honors. Phillips missed the 2024 Big West Championships but still qualified for the NCAA West Regional where he ran in the 100m and 200m, posting times of 10.37 and 28.39, respectively. He would also have a strong indoor campaign earlier this year where he won the MPSF 200m title with a school record time of 20.78 while he also took home the 400m title in the same event with a time of 47.83.
Knight, a transfer from USC, earned First Team All-American honors at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene in the hammer throw after finishing in sixth place with a toss of 74.00m (242-9). His best throw this season was a school record toss of 76.99m (252-7) set in April at the Mt. SAC Relays. Knight, who was named Big West Field Athlete of the Year, won the hammer throw title at this season's Big West Championships with a toss 75.10m (246-5). He was previously named a First Team All-American in the indoor weight throw after he took second place at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston last March.
