CSUN Shuts Out North Dakota 1-0 to Get Back in Win Column

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer gained an early goal from Yoshi Rubalcava and held on late for a 1-0 victory over North Dakota on Sunday night at Matador Soccer Field. Rubalcava's goal was her first of the season and her first career game winner. The Matadors earned their first shutout of the season in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After an initial flurry from North Dakota over the first 10 minutes of action, CSUN turned the tide and began to gain scoring chances. Ashly Torres forced a diving save from goalkeeper Grace Miller off a deep shot, which would be knocked out of bounds. After CSUN earned a corner kick, the Matadors maintained possession leading to a play where Torres kicked the ball into the box in a crowd. Cailey Jackson got a foot on the pass then Rubalcaba gained the ball and took a pair of dribbles to get past her defender before finishing with a left-footed shot for a 1-0 lead.

The Matadors led the way in shots at 8-3 in the first half. CSUN nearly doubled its lead in the 41st minute when Cami Alarcon took a deep shot that banged off the crossbar then Torres just missed wide left off the rebound.
After intermission, the Fighting Hawks appeared to have tied the game in the 52nd minute of play. Kaylie Fowler began the play with an attempt that hit off the crossbar on a save from Riley Liebsack. Off the rebound, Charlie Basinet tapped the ball into the net. However, after an official review, the goal was waived off and an offside call was ruled instead. UND almost scored in similar fashion a minute later when Folwer had her shot saved by Liebsack and Basinet looked to finish off the rebound, but CSUN's netminder pounced on the loose ball. Later in the 74th minute, Sunny Bowlin-Stacy had her shot hit off the crossbar in another close call.
Down the stretch, the Matadors' defense stood tall in keeping the Fighting Hawks off the scoreboard. Avery Toms had UND's final look of the night in the 90th minute, but Liebsack was there for her sixth and final save of the contest.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We asked them to start fast and start aggressive, so I was really excited we got an early goal -- Yoshi's first goal of the season. She's one of our most technical and crafty players, and she had some really good footwork to be able to put that ball away. It was also exciting to be able to hold on to that 1-0 lead. One of our other key things was to start fast and aggressive at the start fof the second half as well and to make sure to be able to hold on to the lead. We wanted one more goal and we were hoping to get that one more insurance goal, but I'm really proud of how they played and excited to get our second win as well as our second home win."
