NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Two goals over the final nine-plus minutes would be the difference in CSUN's 2-0 loss to San Diego on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Riley Liebsack had nine saves in goal for CSUN.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the early going, CSUN generated three shots as well as a corner kick in the first five minutes of action. Cailey Jackson would intercept a pass in USD's final third leading to a one on one with goalkeeper Illise Medrano before the ball was cleared out of the bounds. The Toreros earned their first corner kick in the 11th minute before Liebsack made a pair of clean saves to help keep the game scoreless. CSUN gained a corner kick of its own in the 32nd minute leading to a shot on goal from Jackie Victorio, which Medrano had to leave her feet to stop. Overall, USD outshot CSUN 7-6 in the first 45 minutes of scoreless action.
Liebsack would be tested in the early minutes of the second half as she stopped three shots over a two-minute stretch. Moments later, Yoshi Rubalcava forced a save on a deep shot with Medrano making a two-handed stop. Tamia Graham nearly put the Toreros ahead with a high shot that hit off the crossbar, which would be followed by a second shot from Kylie Smith moments later that was saved by Liebsack. On the other side of the field, Jordyn Canister set up Victorio on an open look from 18 yards, but the shot went just wide left. Victorio also had a shot blocked a minute later followed by another attempt that sailed high off a San Diego turnover. Perhaps CSUN's best look came in the 73rd minute when Canister drove up left wing and kicked a low shot that hit off the post.
Still a 0-0 game in the 81st minute, the Toreros finally broke through shortly after a throw-in. USD broke down the defense leading to a left-footed shot from Mikayla Abrenica who found the corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. Just 3:59 later, USD threatened again as the ball was played in CSUN's box before Lexi Zandonella-Arasa found the corner of the net at the far post just past a diving Liebsack, extending the lead to 2-0. The Toreros controlled the ball in the closing minutes to secure the win.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"Very frustrating overall. We were nowhere near the level and quality we've been playing. We had a poor game overall from the full team. We were frustrated because we wanted to put together back-to-back really good games and we just did not show our quality today."
