CSUN Hosts San Diego and Fullerton in Big West Opener This Week

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer continues its homestand with a pair of matches this week at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors wrap up their non-conference schedule with a Thursday night meeting with San Diego at 7 p.m. before hosting their Big West opener versus Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 7 p.m. Both matches will stream on ESPN+.
MVP SUNDAY
CSUN will honor its University Faculty on Sunday in its Most Valuable Professor (MVP) game. Members of the CSUN Women's Soccer team will honor its favorite professors, who have significantly impacted their academic journey, at halftime. This season will be the second MVP day for the women's soccer team. CSUN Athletics honors professors at fall, winter and spring games throughout the academic year.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN battled in a pair of tight 1-0 decisions last week, going 1-1 in those contests. On Thursday, the Matadors dropped a 1-0 match at Sacramento State with the Hornets scoring the game winner in the 81st minute of action. Three days later, the Matadors returned home and notched a 1-0 victory over North Dakota. Yoshi Rubalcava scored the lone tally against North Dakota, hitting the net in the 15th minute via passes from Cailey Jackson and Ashly Torres. Goalkeeper Riley Liebsack posted six saves including five in the second half to notch the shutout over UND.
FIRST SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON
CSUN's 1-0 win of North Dakota was the Matadors' first shutout of 2024. Riley Liebsack also notched her first shutout as a Matador in the contest. Liebsack and the Matadors have posted a 1.63 goals-against-average on the season as CSUN has held the opposition to one or fewer goals in four of eight matches. The Matadors' last 1-0 win over an opponent was previously on Oct. 14, 2021 against UC Riverside.
MATADOR LEADERS
Cailey Jackson remains the Matadors' goal leader with two entering play this week. Jackson also picked up an assist in last week's action to lead the team with five points. Yoshi Rubalcava is second on the team in assists with three to go with a goal while Jordyn Canister and Jackie Victorio have CSUN's other two goals on the year. In the shot department, Canister has a team-best 16 to go with 10 shots on goal. In front of the net, Riley Liebsack ranks second in The Big West in saves (44) and saves per game (5.50) in her first season of competition with CSUN.
CONFERENCE OPENERS
CSUN opens its 23rd season of Big West competition on Sunday against Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors are 7-12-3 all-time in Big West openers as CSUN looks to snap a two-game skid. The Matadors have not hosted a conference opener since 2016 when they battled to a scoreless tie with UC Davis.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO
The Toreros come in with a 1-4-3 overall record on the season. USD has played five Big West teams already this season, posting a 1-2-2 record in those matches. Last Sunday, San Diego picked up a 1-0 victory over UC Riverside on the road. After finishing ninth in the WCC last season, San Diego was picked to finish 11th in the league this year. Three different Toreros have scored one goal this season with Maquena O'Callaghan topping the team with three points. Ilise Medrano holds a 1.38 goals-against-average with 33 saves and two shutouts in front of the net for USD.
Series History: San Diego leads CSUN 11-4-1 in the all-time series. The teams last squared off in 2019 with CSUN collecting a 1-0 victory at Matador Soccer Field. Overall, the Matadors are 3-4 against the Toreros all time at home.
SCOUTING CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans are 2-5-1 on the season and look to snap a six-match winless streak. Prior to facing CSUN, Fullerton hosts LMU on Thursday night. In last week's action, the Titans played to a 2-2 tie at UNLV. After winning the Big West regular season championship last season, Fullerton was picked to finish second in the league in 2024. Kaylee Noble is tied for fourth in conference in goals with three to go with seven points while Vanessa Buso has netted two goals. At goalkeeper, Mia Ranson leads the conference with 47 saves and ranks second in goals-against-average at 1.28.
Series History: The Titans hold a 19-8-3 edge in the head-to-head series with the Matadors. CSUN looks to snap a five-match winless streak in the series as the Matadors last picked up a win over the Titans in 2018 in a 2-1 victory at Matador Soccer Field. Last season, Fullerton and CSUN battled to a 1-1 tie at Titan Stadium.
