CSUN Sweeps Westmont, 7-0 in Non-Conference Showdown

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Tennis claimed victory over Westmont College Thursday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. The Matadors posted wins across the board including sweeping doubles and winning every singles competition against the Warriors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN won the first doubles bout when the tandem of Yuliia Zhytelna and Angela Ho bested Liska Knight and Johanna Winkler, 6-1. The Matadors would clinch the doubles point when Victoria Santibanez Luna and Nicole West beat Lauren Gee and Sophia Ostovany 6-1. After clinching the doubles point, the Matadors completed the sweep as Sofia Dermenjyan and Emma Moratalla Sanz defeated Francesca Aguirre and Justie Spitzer 6-4.

The Matadors' Angela Ho registered the team's first singles win of the day as she blanked Lauren Gee, 6-0, 6-0 to put CSUN up by two. Sydney Wilson then extended the lead after picking up a straight set victory over Winkler, 6-3, 6-0.Â

Wilson commented on the crowd size and how it felt to play the first dual of the season on home courts. "I had such a great experience at my first home match against Westmont. Having people come out and cheer us on felt amazing." Wilson said.

Madison Shepperson would clinch the victory for the Matadors by taking down Liska Knight, 6-0, 6-3. Shepperson helped reach the magic number of four, making CSUN victorious.

"I am happy with the wins from today's matches. I felt good with how I played and was proud at how I handled the important points throughout doubles and singles." Shepperson said.

In the rest of the matches, CSUN won handedly thanks to Dermenjyan, Moratalla Sanz, and Zhytelna.Â

Moratalla Sanz won her bout against Ostovany, 6-1, 6-3. Dermenjyan came out on top over Spitzer, 6-3, 6-1. "I was super happy with the wins today. I was down a bit in the first set in singles, but I was able to stay composed and figure things out. Everyone was playing well and everyone supported one another," said Dermenjyan, the junior from North Hollywood.

And finally, Zhytelna, playing at the No.1 court, fought hard and prevailed against Aguirre 7-5, 6-3. All these matches accounted for the seven points scored.

NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN hits the road again as the Matadors travel to LMU this Sunday. First serve will take place at the LMU Tennis Center at 11 a.m.

- CSUN improves to 2-1 on the young season, while also winning the first match at home.
- CSUN was practically flawless against the Warriors, as nobody in the seven matches dropped a single set.
- Angela Ho continues her dominance, she improves to 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles with Yuliia Zhytelna. Ho also managed to not allow a single point in her singles match
- Emma Moratalla Sanz improves to 2-0 on the young seasonÂ
