Matadors Drop Road Contest to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif -- CSUN Women's Basketball was defeated 75-34 by the Cal Poly Mustangs at Mott Athletics Center Saturday afternoon. Morgan Edwards led all Matador scorers with 17 in the loss.Â

CSUN opened the scoring when Edwards hit a three to put CSUN up 3-0 at the 9:35 mark. Cal Poly would then match CSUN with a three-point bucket of its own to tie the game up at three. After Edwards put CSUN back in front 5-3, Cal Poly would then go on a 17-0 run over the next 4:20. Edwards would end the run with another three-pointer to end the quarter, as she had all of the Matadors eight points in the first.Â

In the second quarter the Mustangs defense was a strong point, as the hosts outscored CSUN 25-2 in the period. The Matadors' lone points coming on a jump shot by freshman Karsen Marshall.

Two made free-throws by Nnnena Orji got the scoring started for the Matadors in the third quarter. The Mustangs then countered with a 10-0 run before a made layup by Kelly Tumlin broke the streak with 5:07 left to play in the third. A made free-throw by Orji and two threes from downtown by Marshall accounted for the rest of the scoring in the period.

In the fourth quarter, CSUN outscored Cal Poly 12-8 with Edwards accounting for nine out the Matadors' 12 points. Laini Dahlin drilled a shot from distance to account for CSUN's other three points.
