Strong Second Half Leads LBSU Past CSUN
2/8/2025 5:36:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Women's Basketball team fell to Long Beach State, 88-65 at Premier America Credit Union Arena Saturday afternoon. The Matadors were defeated despite four players scoring in double figures, including Alondra Lizama dropping a career high 13 points and 13 rebounds. Nnnena Orji and Kelly Tumlin led CSUN, as both players scored 14.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a high scoring first quarter, as both teams shot over 40% from the field. CSUN made 5-9 baskets from downtown in the first, as Tumlin, the big time shooter from Thursday, made three of those five. Laini Dahlin accounted for the other two shots from behind the arc. However, the Beach matched CSUN as their leading scorer, Savannah Tucker, had nine points in the period as well. LBSU carried a 21-19 lead heading into the second.
Â
In the second quarter, both teams again were going right after one another, with no big run from either side. CSUN made it a mission to drive to the basket in the period and in the game as a whole, as the Matadors shot nine free-throws in the second, draining six of them. The Beach carried a one possession lead throughout most of the second as they finished with 18 in the quarter, as CSUN tallied 17. LBSU had a three point lead at 39-36 going into the intermission.
2ND HALF
To begin the third, both teams traded layups to get the scoring started. The Beach then went on a 6-0 run capped off with a Rachel Loobie free throw at the 7:48 mark. CSUN responded with two Lizama free throws to cut the lead to seven at 47-40. LBSU countered with a 10-4 run before Erica Adams drove in for a layup with 3:16 remaining in the period. The Beach ended the third quarter on a 7-2 run as the away team started to pull away.
Â
In the fourth quarter, the Matadors couldn't match the hot shooting from Long Beach State. The Beach shot 52.9% in both the third and the fourth quarters, as it seemed as if every shot was falling in their favor. CSUN did manage to get to the line and was a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe. However, the Matadors' shots from distance weren't falling in the second half as the Beach's lead kept getting extended. CSUN kept fighting until the end, finishing the last quarter on a 6-2 run. In all though, CSUN was outscored by eight in the fourth with LBSU coming away from the afternoon with the victory.Â
