CSUN Defeats UC Irvine, 6-1 in Big West Bout

NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Women's Tennis found the victory column today after taking down the UC Irvine Anteaters, 6-1 Saturday at Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN won the doubles point and took five out of six singles bouts. Elena Goodman, Angela Ho, Emma Moratalla Sanz, Victoria Santibanez Luna and Yuliia Zhytelna were all victorious in their singles matches.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN kicked off the day by winning the doubles point. Goodman and Moratalla Sanz defeated Asha Gidwani and Nour Khayat, 6-1, to win a half point. Zhytelna and Maddison Shepperson won the final half point as they defeated Yen Nhi Huynh and Carolyna Fowler 6-4. The Matadors started the contest with a 1-0 lead.

Shepperson shared her thoughts on today's match:Â

"Our doubles play today was great. Ever since our match against Cal Poly, I've been feeling more and more confident playing. Especially playing with a strong and consistent double partner in Yuliia. She has helped me become more comfortable on the court."

In singles, CSUN continued its momentum. Santibanez Luna defeated Fowler, 6-1,6-1 at court No. 2 as CSUN took a 2-0 lead.

"It's a great feeling to have our first conference win and be back at home." Santibanez Luna said. "I think the past few losses really pushed us to be competitive and assertive today. I'm really proud of how everyone took care of their role and stayed solid throughout the whole match."

Goodman then did her part as she defeated Amanda Perez 6-1, 6-4 to give CSUN a commanding 3-0 lead.

Ho then did her part to seal the win for the Matadors. She won, 6-3, 6-4 against Yen Nhi Huynh at No. 3 singles. This made it 4-0, which clinched the win for CSUN.Â

"Today was a pretty solid day." Ho said. "I didn't have the best start in doubles and singles, but I eventually found my groove. I am excited for what's to come."

CSUN also found wins on courts No. 5 and No. 1. Moratalla Sanz defeated Hailey Huynh 4-6, 6-2, and 10-7.Â

Zhytelna also found the winner's circle. She defeated Kayla Meraz, 7-6, 7-5 to give CSUN its sixth and final point.
