CSUN Track & Field Wins Six Events at Vince O'Boyle Classic

IRVINE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field notched six individual victories across the men's and women's teams this weekend at the Vince O'Boyle Classic, hosted by UC Irvine, inside Anteater Stadium.
Over the two-day meet, the CSUN men claimed four total victories, three of which in sprint events along with one field event. Walter Pierce won the 400m and Chase Mars claimed the 200m title while the 4x100m relay team took home first place. Tylor Connelly also was victorious in the hammer throw on Friday.
On the women's side, two Matadors found the winner's circle with Summer Mosley taking first in the hammer throw and Jasmine Haskell winning the 400m title.
MEN'S PERFORMANCES
Mars earned his first victory of the outdoor season, taking first place in the 200m with a time of 21.11 out of a 34-athlete field. His time was just ahead of two Matador teammates as Logan Davis was second overall at 21.38 and Pierce was third at 21.58. Two other CSUN athletes finished in the top 10 as well with Caleb Harrell taking seventh place at 21.92 and Ehinome Inegbenoise finishing ninth with a PR of 22.00.
Pierce was the top runner in the 400m as he clocked a time of 47.87 out of a 23-athlete field. Gabe Martinez was third overall in the eventh with a time of 48.67. Also finishing in the top-10, Luke DaVanon took seventh place by running at 49.59 followed by Inegbenoise in eighth place at 49.77 and Jayden Smith in ninth at 49.85.
CSUN's 4x100m relay team of Davis, Harrell, Shamil Youngblood and Mars bested six other teams with a time of 40.61 to take first place on Saturday.
Connelly won the hammer throw with a toss of 56.42m (185-1), finishing ahead of 13 other athletes. Francisco Isiordia also finished in the top 10, taking eighth overall with a PR of 46.45m (152-4).
In other throwing events, Elijah Ignacio was second in the shot put with a season-best mark of 16.34m (53-7.5) while Guillermo Lopez was sixth overall with his toss of 15.65m (51-4.25) and Isiordia was 10th with a throw of 14.85m (48-8.75). Ignacio also paced CSUN in the discus, finishing second as well with a throw of 52.48m (172-2) followed by Lopez in sixth place at 47.31m (155-2).
In jumps, Joey Nations claimed third place in the long jump with his leap of 7.41m (24-3.75), just ahead of Tzu-Ting Chan in sixth place, who set a PR of 7.12m (23-4.5), and Jonrich Dela Cruz, who was ninth at 7.06m (23-2). CSUN also was represented in the triple jump with Jorge Romo, Jr. posting a leap of 13.52m (44-4.25) while Nations was seventh with a PR of 13.43m (44-0.75).
Harrell led CSUN in the 100m, crossing the finishing line in fourth place with a time of 10.68 followed by Youngblood in seventh place at 10.84. The Matador 4x400m team of Linkin Woolf, Layne Buck, Smith and DaVanon were fourth on the day with a time of 3:19.10.
WOMEN'S PERFORMANCES
Out of a 34-athlete field, Mosley notched her first victory as a Matador by setting a meet record in the hammer throw of 58.19m (190-11). Marina McNeil Vivanco also finished in the top five in the hammer with her toss of 47.95m (157-3).
In the 400m, Haskell would reach first place for the first time as a Matador by posting a time of 55.46 out of a 25-athlete field. Jayden Lopes set a PR in the event after clocking a time of 58.46 to take ninth place.
Amani Britton took fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 13.17m (43-2.5) while Brianna Kelpis was seventh overall at 12.99m (42-7.5). In jumps, Zola Grey set a PR in the long jump of 5.91m (19-4.75) to finish in sixth place. Alba Moreno Paredes was also sixth in the high jump after clearing at 1.61m (5-3.25) followed by Ashleigh Porter in eighth place who reached that same mark.
Chandler Smith was the lone representative in the 400m-hurdles where she finished eighth with a time of 1:06.93.
In other events, Kelpis was 11th in the javelin with her toss of 33.89m (111-2). Britton led CSUN with an 11th-place finish in the discus at 41.15m (135-0). Zoey Igbinigie took 18th place in the 100m at 12.40 and 19th place in the 200m with a PR of 25.59.
UP NEXT
CSUN will split its team and compete at two meets next weekend. The Matadors will take part in the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, and the UNLV Rebel Elite next week from April 4-5.
