CSUN Blanks Long Beach State 6-0 to Even Series
4/26/2025 9:04:00 PM | Baseball
The shutout win was CSUN's first against Long Beach State since May 20, 2011 when the Matadors won 2-0 at Blair Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second consecutive game, CSUN jumped on Long Beach State as two runs came across in the top of the first. The Matadors would strike with two outs, beginning with an RBI double from Gauna to plate Trent Abel. Two pitches later, Calvillo rifled a single up the middle to quickly put CSUN ahead 2-0.

The two runs began a stretch of three consecutive innings where CSUN scored runs. After the first two batters were retired in the second, Abel was hit by a pitch then Andrew Becker and Gauna followed with back-to-back singles for a 3-0 lead. In the third, Panganiban unloaded on a one-out solo homer to left field to stretch the lead to four.

Mocherman, who earned the spot start, did his best to protect the early lead by limiting the Dirtbags to one hit. The only blemish against Mocherman came on the first batter of the game, a single from Alex Champagne that did not leave the infield. Mocherman would induce a 6-4-3 double play moments later then go on to retire the next 10 batters in succession to close his day on the mound.
CSUN would increase its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth. Panganiban led off the inning with a double down the left-field line before Will Linberg drew a walk to bring Rios to the plate. The Matador catcher delivered a long double that landed just inside the left-field line, plating both runs for CSUN.
The six-run lead would be more than enough for Halamicek who entered in the bottom of the fifth. The Dirtbags would threaten to start that frame when the first two batters reached, but Halamicek bounced back to retire the next three batters. Halamicek went on to pitch around a single in the sixth and a double in the seventh in tossing two more shutout frames.
The Dirtbags looked to get back into the game in the eighth as an error with one out opened the door. Champagne picked up a single and Jake Evans drew a walk to load the bases with just one out. Halamicek though battled back to sit down the next two batters to keep the shutout intact.
In the ninth, Halamicek allowed two more base runners on base before retiring Conner Stewart on a flyout to right to end the ballgame.
