CSUN Falls to USC in Midweek Action
4/29/2025 8:45:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball dropped an 8-0 decision to USC in a non-conference game on Tuesday at Robert J. Hiegert Field. Matthew Pena tallied two of the Matadors' four hits on the night. Six Matador pitchers saw action in the contest with Blake Ignaciak striking out a career-high seven batters over 3.2 innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pitching would be the story for most of Tuesday's ballgame as just three runs were scored through the first six innings.
After CSUN starter Hayden Hall tossed a shutout top of the first, CSUN looked to jump ahead quickly in the home half of the first. Roberto Gonzalez walked to start the inning while he eventually made it to third base with just one out. Gonzalez attempted to score on a comebacker to the mound, but USC's Jackson Baker made a quick throw home to record the out. CSUN later had Andrew Becker at third base with two outs, but Cameron Calvillo flew out to end the inning.
USC would take advantage of its scoring chance in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. In the frame, Andrew Lamb began the rally with a leadoff double. After a flyout, Lamb touched home plate on a sacrifice fly to put the Trojans ahead.
Hall would record the first out of the third inning before a call to the bullpen was made. CSUN's Jackson Baneulos took over on the mound and quickly struck out Bryce Grudzielanek, but a walk to Adrian Lopez and a triple by Lamb added to the USC lead. Abbrie Covarrubiuas followed with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Over the middle innings though, Ignaciak put a stop to the Trojans' momentum with solid work on the mound. Ignaciak, who struck out Jack Basseer to end the third, struck out the side in a clean fourth inning. After a shutout fifth, Ignaciak retired nine straight batters while he pitched around a two-out double in the sixth.
Meanwhile, CSUN could not get much going on offense against stingy Trojan pitching. Perhaps, the Matadors' best chance to get back in the game occurred in the fourth when Trent Abel walked with two outs and Pena followed with a single to put runners at the corners. However, Jude Favela entered out of the bullpen and retired Jarren Sanderson on a popout to end the threat. Favela went on to toss 2.1 shutout innings with just one hit allowed.
Still a 3-0 game heading to the seventh, USC broke the game open with a five-run outburst. The first three batters reached to start the inning as Ethan Hedges drove in a run on an RBI single. Lopez added a two-run double while Lamb capped off the inning with a two-run homer for an 8-0 lead.
CSUN picked up its fourth hit of the day in the ninth, courtesy of Pena, but Hedges closed the door on the mound by retiring Royce Clayton, Jr. for the final out.
NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN opens a three-game series with UC Riverside this weekend at Robert J. Hiegert Field. The opener is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. with Ghizal Hasan on the call in an audio only broadcast at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
