Kelpis in Sixth Place at Big West Multis, CSUN Claims Two Wins at Titan Tune-Up

LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN's Brianna Kelpis sits in sixth place in the heptathlon after day one of 2025 Big West Track & Field Multi-Events Championship on Friday at Jack Rose Track. The Matador men's and women's teams also competed at the Titan Tune-Up on the campus of Cal State Fullerton on Friday as the Matadors' Elijah Ignacio and Jocelyn Hoggard earned first-place finishes.
BIG WEST MULTIS DAY ONE RECAP
Kelpis, CSUN's lone representative in the women's heptathlon, racked up 3,092 total points to place sixth after four completed events on day one of the conference championships. The senior finished in the top eight in three of four events. Long Beach State's Claudine Raud-Gumiel leads the 16-athlete field with 3,489 points.
Kelpis' best finish came in the shot put where she was second overall with her toss of 12.20m (40-0.5) for 674 points. She would be tied for sixth place in the high jump, tying a PR with a mark of 1.60m (5-3) for 736 points. In the 100m-hurdles, Kelpis took eighth with a time of 14.27, good for 941 points while she was 14th overall in the 200m with her time of 26.65 for 741 points.
Kelpis is competing in her fourth heptathlon at the Big West Championships after previously participating in the event from 2021-23. She has finished as high as fourth place at the 2022 Big West Multis.
TITAN TUNE-UP RECAP
Ignacio notched his first outdoor win of the season in the men's discus, beating eight other athletes. His best toss would come on his last attempt, a throw of 53.70m (176-2) that vaulted him into first place.
Hoggard secured her first career win in the women's shot put, besting four other athletes with a throw of 14.02m (46-0). That toss was a new personal record, which came on her fifth attempt.
In other men's throwing events, Francisco Isiordia was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 15.30m (50-2.5). Three Matadors were in the top-10 in the 1500m race with Ramiro Mateos setting a PR of 4:10.73 to finish sixth while Diego Rodriguez was eighth at 4:14.58 and Caden Bazo was ninth at 4:15.51. Finally, Darrick Jacob, Jr. took sixth place in the 800m with a PR of 1:55.75 followed by Alec Flores in seventh place at 2:08.69.
In the women's discus, Summer Mosley was second overall with her throw of 51.78 (169-10) while Amani Britton set a PR of 48.61m (159-5) to finish third and Myli Level recorded a throw of 42.05m (137-11) to take ninth place. Mosley was also ninth overall in the hammer throw with her toss of 43.08m (141-4). In the 1500m, Sakura Divecchio was fifth overall with her time of 4:56.65 followed by Savannah Ganter in eighth place at 5:00.44 and Elin Markarian in 11th place at 5:09.12.

CSUN's Kelpis will compete in three more events in the heptathlon on Saturday at the 2025 Big West Multi-Events Championships at Long Beach State. After tomorrow's action, week two of the 2025 Big West Track & Field Championships will be held next weekend from May 16-17 with a full slate of competition.
