9/10/2025 1:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer concludes non-conference play on Thursday when the Matadors host Sacramento State at Matador Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. with Ghizal Hasan on the call on ESPN+.Â
FOR STARTERS
CSUN enters play this week at 2-5-1 with its last non-conference match on tap. The Matadors are playing their second team from the Big Sky Conference this season as CSUN notched a win over Portland State last week. CSUN seeks its first win at Matador Soccer Field this season after going 0-3 in August. After this week's contest, CSUN will have a nine-day layoff before returning to action on Sunday, Sept. 21 in its Big West opener against Cal State Fullerton at Titan Stadium. The Matadors will not host a Big West match until Thursday, Sept. 25 against perennial Big West contender UC Irvine.Â
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN split a road trip last week in Portland, Ore. The Matadors would score a season-high four times in a 4-0 shutout win over Portland State last Thursday before falling by a 1-0 decision to Portland on Sunday afternoon.Â
Four different Matadors hit the back of the net in the victory over Portland State. Jordyn Canister netted her second goal of the year, benefiting from a pass from Paige Califf in the 19th minute. After the Vikings lost a player on a red card, CSUN would go ahead 2-0 on a 42nd minute goal from Yasmin Azar who scored after Michelle Monroy put a shot on frame. Later in the second half, Cailey Jackson scored her team-best fourth goal of the year via a pass from Siena Navarra. Freshman Jo Valdez capped off the scoring with a goal in the 80th minute, assisted by Cassidy Imperial-Pham. In goal, Riley Liebsack had four saves en route to her second shutout of the year.Â
On Sunday, CSUN and Portland battled in a tightly-contested match with a 38th minute goal from Hailey Still proving to be the difference. CSUN had eight shots in the match, three on which on goal, while Portland finished with 14 shots. Liebsack was strong again in goal, totaling five saves including four in the second half to keep CSUN within striking distance.Â
LEADING THE BIG WEST
With four goals through eight matches this season, senior Cailey Jackson finds herself tied with three other players for the Big West lead in goals scored. Her four scores have already tied a career high while she became the first Matador since 2022 (Cindy Arteaga) to score in three consecutive matches. Jackson is also ranked second in the Big West in points with nine and sixth in shots with 19. The CSUN forward needs one more goal to become just the 15th player in school history to reach 10 career goals while she is three away from reaching the program's all-time top-10 list.Â
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
CSUN's four-goal outburst against Portland State last week was a season-high for the Matadors in a game this season. Overall, the four goals were the most scored in a match since Sept. 28, 2023 when CSUN won 4-0 over Cal State Bakersfield while it was the most in a road match since Oct. 27, 2022 in a 4-2 triumph at UC Riverside. Thus far in 2025, CSUN has scored nine goals, just six short of the entire goal total from last season.Â
MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Senior goalkeeper Riley Liebsack has entered several all-time CSUN top-10 lists with her performances in goal this season. With her win against Portland State on Sept. 4, Liebsack is now tied for 10th place with Kellie Drenner (2006-07) on the all-time career win list. Her shutout of the Vikings also put her in a 10th-place tie on that list as well, matching the shutout totals of Jen Jasper (2002-03) and Dawn Lenard (1995). Her 2,430 minutes in goal are 10th-most in CSUN history while her 131 career saves are also 10th best. Liebsack's 31 saves this season are currently tied for first in the Big West and her two shutouts rank third in the league.Â
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE
The Hornets are 3-4-0 on the season after splitting a pair of home matches last week to Hawai'i (2-0 loss) and San José State (4-2 win). Sacramento State is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, winning the Big Sky Tournament on three consecutive penalty shootout victories. Overall, the Hornets went 5-6-9 last season and 3-2-3 in the Big Sky Conference. The team was picked to finish tied for fourth in the Big Sky this season by the league's head coaches. Jaety Mandaquit has a team-high two goals on the year while five others have net. Izzy Palmatier has seen the most time at goalkeeper, posting a 1.56 goals-against-average, 32 saves and two shutouts.Â
Series History: CSUN leads Sacramento State 7-3-1 in the all-time series. The teams played last season in the state Capitol with the Hornets winning 1-0 on an 81st-minute goal. CSUN has not hosted Sacramento State since the 2004 season when the Matadors won by a 2-0 margin.Â
