NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (5-5) was victorious over the Youngstown State Penguins, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. Four out of the five singles victories for the Matadors were won in straight sets.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors opened the afternoon by taking two of three doubles matches. Angela Ho and Nicole West teamed for a 6-2 win over Yoana Dudova and Hanna Telzynska at Court No. 1. The Penguins evened the doubles competition with a victory on Court No. 3, Lorena Cedeno and Sarah Partida Garcia defeated Madison Shepperson and Satsuki Ishikawa by a score of 6-3.
Â
The point came down to Court No. 2 when CSUN's Emma Moratalla Sanz and Sandra Arguelles claimed a tightly contested 7-5 decision over Line Greyling and Yeseniia Ovcharova.
Â
With the score now 1-0 in favor of the Matadors, CSUN looked to carry the doubles momentum into singles play.Â
Â
The Matadors quickly extended their lead. On Court No.1, Ho made it look easy against Telzynska where she won 6-1, 6-2. The win was Ho's seventh singles victory of the season.
Â
Â
Ho said this about her win at doubles and singles: "We used today to reset from the past close losses. Today I thought we did a good job at believing in ourselves. Today I was able to be aggressive and be ok with doing the right thing on the court. I think the most important thing is supporting one another and having fun out there on the court."Â
Â
Youngstown State got a point back when Court No. 6 went final as Sarah Partida Garcia topped Arguelles 6-2, 6-3 to give the Penguins their lone point of the match.
Â
Court No. 3 is where the next match finished, as Moratalla Sanz earned a decisive 6-0, 7-5 win over Ovcharova to extend CSUN's lead to 3-1.
Â
The Matadors would clinch the match on Court No. 4. Shepperson battled with Dudova in a gritty match, including a tie-breaker in the first set. Ultimately the sophomore from Mira Loma came out on top, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to make it a 4-1 score.Â
Â
West would make it a 5-1 game for the Matadors, defeating Lorena Cedeno, 7-5, 6-4 on Court No.2 to earn her fourth singles win of the year.Â
Â
West commented on today's performance: "Today my match was long but I think it was important for me to continue to lean into the process and be ok with long points. It was a good team win and the energy was good as well. It was important to get a big win coming off the results last week."Â
Â
Ishikawa secured the sixth point for the Matadors with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 triumph against Greyling at No. 5. It was the only match to go to three sets.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"This was a huge gut check after a rough weekend. We played really well against UC Davis and we lost 4-3. It came down to the last few moments. And then against Pacific we didn't have legs and we didn't play well. We saw a different team today and I am really proud of them. It was a bad loss on Sunday and for us to play a considerably better team as they have made the NCAA tournament five out of the last six years, it meant a lot. Emma and Sandy were down early but they handled the pressure well. Angela is one of the most special players we've ever had. Our top three are amazing. Really proud of how we performed today. All credit to Youngstown State, they are a class program and we really appreciate them competing with us today.
