FRESNO, Calif. — The CSUN Matadors (6-5, 0-2 Big West) claimed the doubles point and won three singles matches to secure a 4-2 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Angela Ho, Emma Moratalla Sanz and Sandra Isabela Arguelles each won their singles point.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
CSUN jumped out to an early lead by taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The duo of Angela Ho and Nicole West set the tone with a dominant 6-0 victory over Andjela Lopicic and Louna Cormier on Court No.1. Madison Shepperson and Satsuki Ishikawa then secured the point for the Matadors with a 6-2 win against Gianna Mastro and Sofia Pizzoni on Court No. 3.
"Today me and Satsuki played with really good energy and kept it throughout the match," said Shepperson. "We felt like that really helped us bring even more energy in singles to secure the win."
The No. 2 doubles match featuring Sandra Arguelles and Emma Moratalla Sanz for CSUN against Eliza Dunbar and Klara Vukicevic was therefore left unfinished at 5-2 once the point was decided.
SINGLES
Fresno State tied the game on Court No. 5. Louna Cormier defeated Vitoria Solis Urdiales, 6-2, 6-2.
Emma Moratalla Sanz then topped Lopicic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 on Court No. 2 to give CSUN a 2-1 lead
"Today even though the other team was really loud, our team started with really good energy." Moratalla Sanz said. " I am so proud of how the team fought. Let's keep this for our march tomorrow!"
Eliza Dunbar bested Tallia Harper on Court No. 3, 6-4, 6-3 to tie the game at two apiece.
CSUN regained control when Ho battled beat Pizzoni in a three-set match at No. 1 singles. After taking the opening set 6-3, Ho dropped the second before responding with a decisive 6-1 victory in the third set to put the Matadors ahead 3-2.
CSUN would then clinch the match when Arguelles overcame Mastro, 6-1. 7-6 (5) to give CSUN the fourth and final win.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"We have come a long, long way in one week. We played possibly the worst match we've had in several years last Sunday. We played with good energy on Wednesday and with half of our lineup out, we were able to beat a really good team at their place today. Angela, Nicole and Emma are some of the best senior leaders we have ever had. Today, the freshmen grew leaps and bounds - Satsuki played some of the best doubles of the season. Sandra played clutch under pressure in what was a great moment for her.
UP NEXT
CSUN has a quick turnaround with a match set for Saturday. The Matadors remain in Fresno but will battle Weber State at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
