CSUN's Rally Falls Short at Cal Poly, 5-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---CSUN Baseball's rally in the late innings fell one run short as the Matadors dropped a 5-4 decision to Cal Poly on Saturday at Baggett Stadium. Trent Abel collected three hits including an RBI double while Kyle Panganiban came off the bench to knock in two runs. The Matadors trailed by as many as five runs on the day, but the Mustangs hung on late to clinch the weekend series.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Matador pitching consisting of freshman Charles Rogers and junior Traig Oughton shut down the high-powered Mustang offense through the first three innings on Saturday.
However, Cal Poly would not be kept down over the middle innings as home runs over the fourth and fifth innings gave the Mustangs a cushion. In the fourth, Jake Downing blasted a two-run homer off Oughton to break up a scoreless tie. In the fifth, Nate Castellon and Alejandro Garza hit back-to-back home runs to further extend the lead. Cal Poly would later go up 5-0 on a two-out RBI double from Dylan Kordic with two outs in the fifth.Â
On the flip side, the Matadors stranded seven runners including four in scoring position over the first five innings against starter Carson Turnquist.
Trailing 5-0 in the sixth, the Matador bats finally broke through against Turnquist with a two-out rally. With a runner at second base, Cameron Calvillo kept the inning alive by drawing a two-out walk. Panganiban followed next with an RBI triple to right. Two pitches later, Matthew Thomas rifled an RBI single through the left side to pull the Matadors to within 5-3.Â
CSUN would strand two runners to end the sixth but went back on the attack in the seventh. After singles from Matthew Pena and Mateo Rickman, Abel delivered a double down the left field line to plate Pena. However, in a crucial turn of events, Rickman would be thrown out at third base on the Abel double. Calvillo then was retired to end the frame as CSUN still trailed 5-4.Â
The back half of the Matador bullpen kept the Mustangs at bay after the sixth inning. Logan Miller stranded two base runners to end the seventh inning while Jaiden Turner worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.Â
In the top of the ninth, CSUN could not muster one more rally against closer Nick Bonn. The trio of Andrew Becker, Pena and Colton Boardman each went down on strikes as Bonn nailed down his 10th save of the season for Cal Poly.Â
