NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Four early runs would hold up for UC Santa Barbara as CSUN Baseball fell 4-2 on Senior Day on Sunday at Robert J. Hiegert Field. Ryan Ellis gave CSUN five shutout innings out of the bullpen, scattering four hits while striking out three batters. The Matador bullpen would blank the Gauchos over the final eight innings as seniors Cody Carson, Zach Johnson and Logan Miller each tossed scoreless frames late in the game.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gauchos jumped on the Matadors at the outset, plating all four of their runs on the afternoon before CSUN could record an out. A pair of walks along with an error loaded the bases to start the ballgame, setting the stage for three straight run-scoring singles. Nick Husovsky, who hit the game-winning home run on Saturday, capped a four-run scoring spree with an RBI single. The Matadors went to the bullpen and summoned Charles Rogers who quickly went on to retire the next three Gaucho batters to finally end the first inning.
UCSB's Kellan Montgomery kept the Matador bats at bay through the first five innings, scattering three CSUN hits over that span. The Matadors would threaten in the bottom of the fifth after a one-out Trent Abel single and a Cameron Calvillo walk. However, Montgomery went on to retire both Jehee Lee and Vaughn Coleman to keep the Matadors off the scoreboard.Â
Meanwhile, after a shaky start for the Matador pitching staff, CSUN would flip the script over the last eight innings. Ellis took over in the second inning and went on to retire 10 of the first 12 batters he faced.
The Gauchos looked to extend their lead in the fifth inning when they picked up one-out singles from Rowan Kelly and William Vasseur, but Ellis bounced back to induce an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play. Ellis stranded two more Gaucho base runners in the sixth inning, giving the Matador offense a chance to break out.Â
In the sixth, CSUN received a lift when Kyle Panganiban led off with a triple. The hit would spell the end the of Montgomery's time on the mound as Gauchos turned to their closer Cole Tryba next. Matthew Thomas followed by drawing a walk before Matthew Pena singled in CSUN's first run. Another RBI followed when Mateo Rickman singled to right field, however, in a pivotal moment of the inning, Pena was thrown out trying to advance from first to third base. From there, Tryba struck out Will Linberg and then retied Abel on a groundout to end the inning.Â
After the sixth, Tryba limited the Matadors to a single base runner in each of the final three innings. CSUN brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but Tryba retired Lee on strikes and got Coleman to ground out on a close play at first base to end the game.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"It's a meaningful day because it's Mother's Day and Senior Day, and we wanted to honor all mothers and all of our seniors because we feel very lucky to have them in our lives. A very disappointing result in the end. We did some good things and we played good baseball for eight innings. We did some good things defensively and we did some good things passing the baton on the mound. We couldn't get it done offensively, which is a frustrating thing. Overall, a frustrating series. I blame myself for not preparing the guys as well as I should have. But happy Mother's Day."
