NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field's thrower Kyriaun Davis earned his first career Big West Field Athlete of the Week award on Tuesday, as announced by the league office.Â
An Oceanside native, Davis shattered CSUN's men's discus record that stood for 42 years this past Saturday at UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational. Davis would establish a new personal record of 57.63m (189-1) in his first attempt of the meet, breaking the school record and taking first place in the competition. He would surpass 55 meters three more times in his series of throws including topping 57 meters in his final attempt of the day.Â
Davis also competed in the shot put this past weekend, where he reached the final round with his mark of 16.32m (53-6.5) and eventually finished ninth overall in the competition.Â
Davis' record-breaking throw surpassed Rick Weyers' mark of 57.12m (187-5), set during the Matadors' 1984 season. Last month, Davis reached the CSUN's all-time top 10 discus list for the first time with a toss of 55.10m (180-9) at the Triton Invitational.Â
On the season, Davis has won two discus competitions with his other victory coming at the UCSB Invitational, while he took first place in the shot put at the Triton Invitational. Davis' throw of 57.63m in the discus ranks first in the Big West and 38th overall in the nation this season.Â
Davis' Big West Field Athlete of the Week award is the first for a member of the Matadors' men's track & field team this season. On the women's side, CSUN's Summer Mosley claimed the Field Athlete of the Week award just two weeks ago on April 21.Â
The CSUN Track & Field teams return to competition later this week in the final tune-up before next week's Big West Championships. The Matadors are set for action at Azusa Pacific's Franson Last Chance from May 7-9 and Cal State Fullerton's Titan Tune-Up on May 8.Â
