CSUN Continues Hot Start with Sweep of Youngstown State
3/9/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (8-0) extended its winning streak to eight to open the 2015 season with a 7-0 victory over visiting Youngstown State Monday afternoon. The Matadors won five of the singles matches in straight sets and won two of three doubles matches to capture the seventh point.
Facing a Penguin squad that won the Mid-American Conference and participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2014, the Matadors continued their torrid start to the 2015 season with a 7-0 victory at the Matador Tennis Complex.
Although Youngstown State won the top doubles draw, CSUN won the early point by taking the No. 2 and 3 draws. At 8-0, the Matadors are off to their best start since the 2001 squad started 11-0.
Sophomores Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei improved to 8-0 on the year and did not lose a game in winning in the second draw. They are 25-3 in their year-plus as a doubles tandem at CSUN.
Criss Rodriguez and Jessica Warren, two Matador upperclassmen, moved to 5-2 on the year with an 8-2 victory in the third draw.
"We started slow in one doubles and in the top half of singles, but I was happy to see us work through our troubles and problem solve well," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said.
In singles action, Vivian Lin won on Jim Gorman Court in the top draw. The sophomore won in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6 and 10-5, to improve to 4-3 on the year.
At No. 2, Hsu won in doubles in straight sets and lost only five games to improve to 7-1 on the season. At No. 3, Kiryang Kim improved to 6-1 in her rookie season by winning in straight sets and dropping just six games.
In the No. 4 match, Rodriguez won her fourth-straight singles match to improve to 6-1 on the season. The fifth draw saw Poei take a 6-1, 6-2 decision to also post a 6-1 start to the season in singles play.
Finally, Warren won unconventionally in the sixth draw: 7-6 (7) and 4-3 (8). She is also 6-1 on the year in singles action.
CSUN returns to action Tuesday, Mar. 10 with a 2 p.m. match against UTEP.
