Matadors Open Big West Play on Jan. 5 vs. Cal State Fullerton
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (7-7) lost 47-36 to Penn Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest at The Matadome. Channon Fluker scored 14 points and Eliza Matthews grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, but the Matadors struggled offensively in the loss to the Quakers.Â
Neither team is likely to look back on Saturday's game as an offensive showcase. The victorious Quakers shot 27.7 percent (18-of-65) from the field, edging CSUN's 24.1 percent (14-of-58). From 3-point range, the Matadors finished 3-of-17 (17.8 percent) while Penn was at 33.3 percent (3-of-9).Â
CSUN also struggled to close out several periods Saturday. In the first period, the Matadors jumped out to a 7-1 lead only to see Penn finish the frame on a 9-4 run to trail just 11-10 after 10 minutes. Despite three 3-pointers from Emily Cole in the second quarter, the Quakers closed the frame on a 10-1 run to take a 25-21 lead at halftime.Â
In the third period, CSUN came out of the halftime looking to reclaim the lead and did so on a free throw from Fluker (30-29). From there, Penn closed the period on a 8-0 run to lead 37-30 after 30 minutes of action. In the fourth, CSUN managed just six points and could not get any closer than five points before the final buzzer sounded.Â
Fluker had a tough night inside, finishing 6-of-18 from the field to post a team-high 14 points. She just missed her ninth double-double of the season by posting nine boards and added two blocks and a steal in 25 minutes.Â
Matthews recorded her third-straight game with double-figure rebounds, pulling down a career-best 14 boards. She added five points and a block in a career-high 30 minutes of work.Â
Cole finished with nine points on the three 3-pointers while Tessa Boagni finished with six points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.Â
Both teams finished with 46 rebounds and 15 offensive rebounds. CSUN committed 13 turnovers that resulted in seven Quaker points and Penn got 25 points from its bench.
The 36 points are the fewest scored by a CSUN team since a 46-31 loss to UC Santa Barbara in the 2013 Big West Tournament.Â
The Matadors will look to rebound in 2017 with the start of Big West Conference play. CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. in both teams' league opener. Â
