Matadors Face Titans, Mustangs to Begin League Slate

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (7-7) opens Big West Conference play with contests against Cal State Fullerton and at Cal Poly. On Thursday, Jan. 5, the Matadors host the Titans in a 7 p.m. contest at The Matadome with Mark Roberts calling all the action on the CSUN Sports Network. Two days later, CSUN makes the trek to San Luis Obispo, CA to take on the Cal Poly Mustangs at 4 p.m. with Roberts again calling all the action. Last week, CSUN split a pair of non-conference games to close out the 2016 calendar year. In a victory at Seattle, Channon Fluker finished with 20 points and tied a career high with 19 rebounds while Tessa Boagni recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The win was CSUN's league-leading fifth on the road this season.
Two days later, the Matadors fell 47-36 to Penn in a slugfest. Fluker finished with 14 points and nine rebounds while Eliza Matthews grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. For her efforts, Fluker received her second Big West Player of the Week award this season.
This week, CSUN begins its campaign for a Big West Championship with a pair of tests. On Thursday night, CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton looking to snap a four-game losing streak at home. The Titans boast the league's top scorer and are 0-3 against common opponents with the Matadors.
On Saturday, the Matadors make the journey up the California coast to face Cal Poly. The Mustangs host their rival UC Santa Barbara Gauchos before squaring off the Matadors. Cal Poly has three players averaging over 13 points per game.
Next week, CSUN hits the road for a pair of league contests. On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Matadors travel to Orange County to face the UC Irvine at 7 p.m. at the Bren Events Center. Three days later, CSUN travels to Northern California to face the UC Davis Aggies at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14.

- The Cal State Fullerton Titans enter Thursday's contest at CSUN with a 3-10 overall record
- The Titans have posted wins over Whittier, Montana and Antelope Valley on the season
- Iman Lathan leads the Titans and Big West in scoring at 17.7 points per game

- The Mustangs are coming off a 57-48 loss at CSU Bakersfield in which the game was stopped during the fourth period because of a leak in the Roadrunners' facility
- Hannah Gilbert leads the Mustangs in scoring at 13.6 ppg and is second in rebounding at 6.8 per game
- Twin sisters Dynn and Lynn Leaupepe average 13.3 ppg and Lynn leads the team in rebounding at 7.9 per game
- As a team, the Mustangs are 37.7 percent from the field and average 42 rebounds per game
- The Mustangs have made 37 3-pointers on the season and are shooting 21.4 percent from beyond on the arc on the year
- Cal Poly won all three meetings with CSUN last year, including a victory in the opening round of the Big West Tournament
