Matadors Start Big West Play with Home Win over Titans

Serafina Maulupe Ties Career High with Five 3-Pointers in Victory
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (8-7, 1-0 Big West) defeated Cal State Fullerton 58-41 Thursday evening at The Matadome in both teams' 2017 Big West Conference opener. Junior Serafina Maulupe tied a career high with five 3-pointers and led the Matadors with 15 points as CSUN snapped a four-game losing streak at home and posted their 12th-straight win over the Titans.Â
CSUN connected on a season-high 14 3-pointers in the win Thursday evening, finishing one shy of matching a school record. Maulupe led the way with an efficient 5-of-7 from downtown to post a team-high 15 points. She added three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 19 minutes and leads the Matadors with 38 3-pointers on the season.Â
Cheyenne Allen was second on the team with three 3-pointers, setting a new career high in the process. She added a season-high six assists and three rebounds in 30 minutes of work. Hayley Tanabe and Emily Cole each had two treys while Lizzy Tonks and Jordan Smith each had one. In all, CSUN shot 45.2 percent (14-of-31) from downtown in the victory.Â
CSUN started the game strong, jumping out to a 6-0 lead on 3-pointers from Maulupe and Tanabe. Maulupe then canned her second of the quarter on the final possession of the frame to give the Matadors a 14-6 lead.Â
In the second quarter, Cal State Fullerton closed to within 19-17 with 2:03 to play before halftime. Maulupe stopped the run with a 3-pointer and Channon Fluker added a basket to give CSUN a 24-17 lead after 20 minutes of work.Â
The second half opened with 3-pointers from Maulupe, Allen and Tanabe, forcing a quick timeout from the Titans. The lead swelled to as many as 21 at one point in the third and CSUN carried a 45-25 advantage into the fourth.Â
More connections from deep from Maulupe and Cole stretched the lead to 26 early in the fourth before Cal State Fullerton closed the margin of victory before the final buzzer.Â
Fluker recorded her league-leading ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She added four blocks and tied a career high with three assists in 34 minutes of action.Â
The Matadors held Cal State Fullerton to 41 points, the fewest by a CSUN opponent this season. The Titans finished 12-of-43 (27.9 percent) from the field and 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from 3-point range. CSUN held a 37-35 advantage in rebounding and had 15 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.Â
