Junior Mari Taslagyan Scores Single Point for Matadors
LOS ANGELES --- The CSUN women's tennis team (2-4) lost 4-1 to No. 21 UCLA Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. CSUN nearly took the doubles point as Kiryang Kim and Mari Taslagyan won their No. 2 draw and Taslagyan won the first set of her fifth draw in singles before her opponent had to stop playing.Â
CSUN head coach Gary Victor switched up his doubles' line-up against the nationally ranked Bruins, the second Pac-12 power the Matadors have faced on the young season. At No. 2, Kim and Taslagyan posted a 6-3 decision and CSUN nearly held the early advantage, but the Bruins took the No. 3 doubles contest.
In singles, the Bruins won in straight sets in the top three matches to earn the victory. In the fifth draw, Taslagyan won 6-2 in the opening set before her opponent, Terri Fleming, had to stop playing and retired from the match. Two singles matches went unfinished.Â
The Matadors return to action on Thursday, Feb. 18 with a home match against Santa Clara. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. from Matador Tennis Complex.Â
Editor's Note: Two matches were initially reported incorrectly. Mari Taslagyan won her first set 6-2 when it was initially reported as her leading 5-2 when her opponent retired. Also, Scout Shutter lost 7-6 in the first set of her unfinished No. 6 draw.Â
