Although their final round 310 dropped them one spot on the final team leaderboard, head coach Gina Umeck was pleased with the result.
"I'm disappointed in the day for sure," said Umeck. "In the same breath, we must acknowledge that we have improved at every event this spring. We still need to learn to close but what I ask of our team is to improve every day and we've done that. You can be sure we are getting ready for conference next week."
Cesilie Hagen led CSUN with her best finish of the season as the junior tied for ninth in the 98-player field. Hagen's three round total of 10-over 226 was her season low by seven shots as she wound up posting rounds of 74-75-77. Hagen's two-over 74 in round one was also her low for 18 holes in 2015-16 and her ninth place finish was second to her fifth place showing at the Santa Clara Colby Invitational in October.
"Cesilie is getting comfortable with her play and at a great time of year for it," added Umeck.
Cake Phuchanbanchob opened and closed the final round in the same position, tied for 14th. After posting rounds of 79-74 on Monday, Phuchanbanchob, who was second the Ysabel Tran with 35 pars for CSUN, finshed the final round at four-over 76 to finish the tournament at 13-over 229.
Senior Arinda Bhanaraksa finished just outside of the top 20 after posting a final round five-over 77. Bhanaraksa, who moved up from 31st, finished tied for 23rd at 17-over 233 with rounds of 74-82-77. Tran, CSUN's leading scorer coming in, wound up tied for 31st at 19-over 235 with scores of 82-73-80. She did however post the most pars of any Matador with 36 over three rounds. Shenna DeLeon completed the CSUN scoring as she tied for 48th at 23-over 239 following rounds of 80-77-82.
The Matadors' team score of 916 (307-299-310) is their low for 54 holes this season. Seattle (893) led from start to finish and held off Wyoming (894) by one shot for the team title. Individually, Kala Keltz of Northern Colorado carded a three-over 219 to win medalist honors.
The Matadors have a quick turnaround as they will return from Arizona Tuesday night and travel to Hawai'i Friday to begin preparation for the Big West Championship (Apr. 17-19) at the Bay Course at Kapalua Golf.
