NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's golf team carded an opening round 318 and is in sixth place through 18 holes Sunday at the Big West Championship at the Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawai'i.
Junior Cesilie Hagen is tied for seventh after one round after she posted a three-over 75. Hagen was four-over after four holes but birdied holes five and six to get back to two-over. She was still two-over through the 11th hole when bogeys at No. 12 and No. 14 dropped her back to four-over. A birdie two at the par-three 17th and a par at the 18th left Hagen at three-over for the championship.
Hagen is one of two players at three-over and she is just three shots off the pace set by Paige Lee of UC Davis who carded an even-par round of 72.
Freshman Ysabel Tran is in the top 20 as the CSUN freshman is tied for 16th at seven-over 79. Tran had 12 pars on Sunday along with five bogeys and one double bogey six on the second hole.
Senior Arinda Bhanaraksa is just outside the top 20 after posting a nine-over 81. Bhanaraksa, who is tied for 22nd, birdied her first and final holes but had to count a double bogey six on No. 4 and a triple bogey eight on No. 6.
Cake Phuchanbanchob and Shenna DeLeon are tied for 29th at 11-over 83.
"We know we're 10 shots back from the pack but that's just two shots per person which is nothing in these conditions," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "We're taking nothing for granted and every single shot matters."
Cal Poly leads the team race after one round as the Mustangs posted a team round of 305, which is three shots better than UC Riverside (308), Long Beach State (308) and UC Davis (308). Hawai'i (316) is fifth followed by the Matadors (318), Cal State Fullerton (324) and UC Irvine (329).Â
CSUN will be paired with UC Davis and Hawai'i for round two which gets underway Monday at 8:15 a.m.
